SDCC 2024: DC’s Absolute Universe Reveals New Details

As a longtime DC Comics fan, I’m absolutely thrilled about the new revelations from San Diego Comic-Con regarding DC’s Absolute Universe! The upcoming Absolute Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Flash series promise to deliver fresh takes on these classic characters that I’ve grown up reading.

At the DC Comics and Absolute Power panel during San Diego Comic-Con, fresh insights were shared about the upcoming Absolute Universe series from DC Comics. This exciting new initiative will introduce revamped versions of beloved DC characters starting in October. Kicking off the lineup are Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, Absolute Superman by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval, and Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. During the panel, the creative teams offered a sneak peek into their reimagined takes on these classic DC heroes.

DC’s Absolute Batman explained

Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta discussed the latest Absolute Batman edition, introducing “The Heavyweight Caped Crusader” as their moniker for this new interpretation of Bruce Wayne. He’s a young man in his 20s, standing at 6 feet tall, but reaching an impressive 7 feet when wearing the batsuit. This version tips the scales at 250 pounds, making him quite a large figure. In his civilian life, this reimagined Bruce works as a city engineer or construction worker. Snyder shared his apprehension about returning to Batman after his successful tenure with the character but emphasized that this is a complete overhaul.

As a longtime fan of comic books, especially Batman, I’m always eager to learn about new interpretations and redesigns of beloved characters. Dragotta’s revelation of the revamped versions of Alfred and Absolute Black Mask in Absolute Batman has piqued my interest.

DC’s Absolute Wonder Woman Explained

Although Absolute Batman represents a significant departure from the traditional portrayal of Batman, DC’s Absolute Wonder Woman takes things a step further with an intriguing twist. Unlike the classic Wonder Woman who grew up on Themyscira, this version was reared in the Underworld. This background is reflected not only in her armor but also in her means of transportation – she rides a black skeletal Pegasus instead of the typical white one.

DC’s Absolute Superman Explained

Jason Aaron shared some insights about the upcoming project, “Absolute Superman.” Initially reluctant to write another ongoing series, he was drawn in by the unique aspect of this opportunity. Aaron explained that his approach involves envisioning Superman as if he were being created anew in today’s world. The only detail he confirmed is that Krypton will explode. Despite significant differences, Aaron emphasized that their goal with these new “Absolute” versions remains true to the characters’ fundamental essence.

DC’s Absolute Flash Confirmed

In the end, the DC panel came to a close with the announcement of the fourth ongoing series within DC’s Absolute Universe: Absolute Flash by Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles. No additional information was shared about this particular version of the Flash character, but an intriguing teaser image was provided as a preview.
