SDCC 2024: Mortal Kombat 1 Is Adding Animalities

As a long-time fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, I was absolutely thrilled to witness the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The opportunity to once again experience the iconic Animalities finishing moves, which first debuted in Mortal Kombat 3 back in 1995, is a nostalgic and exciting addition to the game.

At San Diego Comic-Con on Friday evening, there was a Mortal Kombat 1 panel labeled “Mortal Kombat 1: MORE Kombat!” where the upcoming expansion, Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, was announced. This downloadable content is sure to bring chaos to the game when it’s released, as is common with DLC. Players can look forward to new storylines and the chance to acquire some fresh characters, both licensed and familiar, for their fighter roster. Additionally, a long-absent fatality type makes a comeback: Animalities. (approximately 120 words)

Introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 back in 1995, Animalities are a feature that lets victorious fighters transform into animals before brutally defeating their opponents with gruesome animalistic finishing moves. These Animalities will be incorporated into the game following the release of the Khaos Reigns DLC on September 24th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (available on Steam and Epic Games Store).

At Comic-Con, the trailer unveiled presented an enhanced version of Animalities animations starting from the three-minute mark, which you can check out below. The trailer then displays a black screen accompanied by various animal sounds. Subsequently, it showcases a hyena, hippopotamus, gorilla, T-rex skeleton, wolves, a giant scorpion, and a puffer fish that bursts open its victim internally. Following this sequence of disturbing (yet impressive) Animalities finishes, there’s a demonstration of Mileena transforming into an orchid mantis in real-time and consuming her adversary’s head before tearing the rest apart.

As a long-time fan of the Mortal Kombat series, I’m thrilled to hear that the much-loved finishing moves are making a comeback in Mortal Kombat 1. It brings back fond memories of staying up late as a kid, playing Mortal Kombat II at my friend’s house and trying to master those iconic fatalities.
