SDCC 2024: Paul Feig Speaks Out on Possibility of Bridesmaids 2

As a hardcore fan of comedies and someone who has followed the careers of the Bridesmaids cast since their breakout role in the 2011 hit film, I can’t help but feel a pang of both excitement and disappointment at the prospect of a sequel.

Paul Feig’s 2008 film “Bridesmaids,” which he directed, has been a game-changer for women in comedy, leaving an indelible mark on cinema for over a decade. The movie raked in an impressive $300 million at the global box office during its theater run, making it Judd Apatow’s highest-grossing production to date. This groundbreaking film played a significant role in launching the careers of comedic talents such as Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Ellie Kemper, who continue to dominate the genre today. In “Bridesmaids,” Wiig portrays Annie, a single woman on the brink of financial ruin after the recession. When her best friend Lillian (Rudolph) announces her engagement, Annie is thrust into the world of wedding planning and must navigate the chaos of her role in the bridal party, all while trying to make Lillian’s dream wedding a reality.

Will Bridesmaids Ever Get a Sequel?

In an uninspired corner of filmmaking, it’s now commonplace for sequels, threequels, and reboots of beloved films from the early 2000s to dominate. During a recent interview with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con while discussing his latest project “Jackpot!”, Feig addressed the long-standing query regarding a possible sequel to “Bridesmaids”.

Feig playfully responded, “Nope, not that one for me. I’m unsure actually. You know, creating a sequel is challenging. The original movie was fantastic because of her chaotic life and watching her work through it all. But, if we make a sequel, we can’t have her life be in shambles again. So, it could be a wedding, but… people’s lives don’t deteriorate! What are you suggesting?”

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: Some of the original cast members, including McCarthy and Byrne, have hinted at their interest in returning for a potential sequel. McCarthy is all in right away, but Byrne takes a more thoughtful approach. She won’t commit unless the rest of the ladies join as well. They’ve been keeping busy with various projects – Wiig in “Despicable Me 4” and “Big Mouth,” McCarthy playing Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” Byrne in “Insidious: The Red Door” and a few episodes of “Bluey.” Kemper hasn’t been as active lately, but she did star in Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners.”

Stay tuned to ComicBook for updates.
