Daniel Warren Johnson, the writer of “Transformers,” shared his thoughts on the positive fan response to the series during San Diego Comic-Con 2024. In an interview with ComicBook, he discussed his experience working on the title. The audience has been highly receptive to his unique portrayal of the Autobots and Decepticons. Johnson humbly acknowledged, “It’s really great. I’m trying to come up with something clever to say, but honestly, it’s very gratifying.” However, he recalled encountering some criticism from fans due to certain creative decisions regarding specific characters. These characters hold a special place in the hearts of older readers, so their departure can lead to backlash.
He confessed that some traditional Transformers fans were disappointed when I killed off Bumblebee. “Old-timers are asking, ‘Why did you do that?’ I reply with a gentle reassurance. On the other hand, young fans, many of whom are just discovering the series through comic books, have already encountered violent scenes. The parents seem unfazed, so it’s all good.” Bringing new fans into the comic book world is an exciting development.
Johnson reminisced about the experience, expressing how incredible it had been. “A big thank you to all of you, I truly appreciate your support,” he added. The reaction had been astonishingly positive, he continued. “I picked up this project for enjoyment alone,” he explained. “Who would have thought it would grow into something so successful? It’s a privilege for me to live my childhood dream and earn a living from it. A huge thank you to Optimus for making this possible.”
