SDCC 2024: What We Do in the Shadows Star Kristen Schaal Opens Up About The Guide's Growing Role

As a die-hard fan of “What We Do in the Shadows,” I’ve been on this vampire-slaying, waffle-making, energy-drink-guzzling rollercoaster ride since the very beginning. The show has become more than just a source of hilarious laughter for me; it’s a part of my life experience, much like how I can’t live without coffee or my weekly trivia night at the local pub.

As a dedicated fan of “What We Do in the Shadows,” I was thrilled to learn that the beloved comedy is returning for its sixth and final season in October. Having followed the show since its inception, I have grown attached to its unique blend of humor, wit, and supernatural elements.

Schaal playfully remarked, “That question feels like I have full control, and I guess that’s why I keep involved!” When inquired about her continued participation in the show.

In a different turn of events, Simms shared, “We adored her immensely,” and it just so happened that during her first guest appearance, she was in Toronto at an opportune moment. To our surprise, characters played by Mark Proksch (Colin) and Anthony Atamanuik (Sean the neighbor), initially intended to be one-time appearances, became significant figures on the show instead. The moral of the story seems to be that if you impress us, you’re welcome to join the cast!

Paul Simms Talks What We Do in the Shadows Ending:

During a chat with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con, Simms was inquired about whether the series might prolong past its sixth season.

“I prefer wrapping up things a tad earlier rather than extending too long, in my opinion. I’m currently editing our current season, which happens to be one of my favorites, and instead of turning it into an extraordinary finale, we decided to maintain the casual approach we’ve always taken. It culminates in a very satisfying ending, but what’s interesting is that this season doesn’t require watching the entire series to understand or enjoy it. You could jump in at any point and still find it amusing and enjoyable.”

In early 2023, ComicBook had a conversation with Harvey Guillén, star of “What We Do in the Shadows,” who portrays Guillermo de la Cruz. During this discussion, he expressed his feelings about the show concluding and revealed his aspirations for Guillermo’s future.

Guill?n admitted he suspected it might end, but they weren’t sure until they received the call. He explained, “We had thought perhaps six or seven seasons, but then we realized, ‘It’s probably time to conclude.’ Six or seven seems like a good number to bring things to a close. Some shows continue for too long, and I often find myself wondering, ‘Is this show still on?’ It feels strange when something stays on air for too long. We didn’t want our show to become that way.” In simpler terms, he wanted to avoid making the series drag on and lose its freshness.

What We Do in the Shadows returns on Monday, October 21st at 10 PM ET on FX.
