SDCC 2024: Where the Hell Is Blade?

As a long-time Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and frustration every time I think about Blade‘s production woes. Five years ago, we were all thrilled when Mahershala Ali was announced as the new Blade during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel. Since then, it feels like a rollercoaster ride of delays, director changes, and writers’ hell.

Let’s be honest: Mahershala Ali’s “Blade” project for Marvel Studios has faced numerous challenges. Five years ago, during San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H panel, Marvel Studios officially announced that the Academy Award-winning actor would portray Eric Brooks, the antihero alias of Blade. Initially planned for release by now, production on the film is yet to begin. Two directors have departed from the project, and it has been stuck in the writers’ room since then. The movie is currently slated for a release next year, although Marvel Studios seems hesitant to discuss its progress publicly.

On Saturday night at Hall H, Marvel executive Kevin Feige spoke about Marvel’s upcoming movies in 2025. He discussed “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in detail. However, Marvel remained silent regarding the film that is scheduled to come out next year, “The Untitled Marvel Film.”

Previously this week, Feige shared some positive perspectives regarding the film during an interview with Shadow and Act on the Deadpool & Wolverine press tour. He acknowledged the delay in production and expressed disappointment felt by both us and some fans, but reassured, “We have a scriptwriter working on it now. I’ve read half of his latest draft, and so far, it’s showing promise.”

Despite this, Blade’s troubles have gained notable recognition. In fact, Wesley Snipes himself, the actor who brought the character to life during the 2000s, has addressed the issue publicly.

In simpler terms, Snipes expressed his encouragement and backing to the person in question, stating that they have his blessings and support. He also made clear that some of the difficulties they were encountering with the project weren’t their fault, and that there are many other factors involved in producing the Blade series. Snipes wished them good luck and considered them an essential part of the team.

Blade is currently set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025.
