As a long-time gamer and avid attendee of Comic-Con, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia every time this iconic event rolls around. And today, as we kick off the much-anticipated San Diego Comic-Con 2023, I find myself reflecting on one of my most memorable experiences at the convention – Ashley Eckstein’s LEGO dress at the Her Universe Fashion Show back in 2016.
Today marks the beginning of San Diego Comic-Con for those who are partaking in the excitement! This much-anticipated convention, renowned for comics, films, television, gaming, and more, has finally commenced. Enthusiasts are eagerly waiting to discover the wonderful surprises that this four-day extravaganza holds. Among the many highlights, tonight brings the 10th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show. This event is being overseen by Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein, who has gained fame for her voice role as Ahsoka Tano in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” She will be joined by Michael James Scott, currently shining on Broadway as the Genie in “Aladdin.” In an exclusive interview with ComicBook, Eckstein shared her fondest memory from the past nine shows. Surprisingly, it’s the Ashoka LEGO dress she wore back in 2016 that holds a special place in her heart.
One of my cherished memories is about a LEGO dress I own. Nathan Sawaya, a renowned LEGO master builder and creator of the popular Art of the Brick traveling exhibition, was working with his wife Courtney during that time. In a casual conversation, Courtney mentioned, “My husband is a famous LEGO builder, wouldn’t it be amazing if he made you a dress out of LEGO bricks?” The idea struck me instantly as the epitome of geek chic fashion – merging our passion for all things geeky with high-end couture. That was the first time we took something unconventional, like LEGOs, and integrated it into haute couture. We then pushed the boundaries further by creating a dress that could not only be admired as an artwork but also worn on a runway – a feat never achieved before with LEGO gowns, which were previously just statues or sculptures.
She went on to explain, “This was our innovative debut – the fusion of LEGO bricks and fashionwear. With Andrew MacLaine, my designer since 2015, we collaborated with Nathan to explore how to transform LEGO bricks into a wearable dress. To accomplish this, Andrew constructed a base made from LEGO bricks by sewing a canvas dress first and then attaching 5,000 flat bricks using drilled holes as if they were buttons. Once completed, he passed it on to Nathan who masterfully crafted the Ahsoka artwork on both sides of the dress with over 10,000 LEGO bricks.”
“The item weighs 25 pounds, according to Eckstein. This was the first time we got it right, perfectly blending something quirky and geeky with high-end fashion, an unprecedented fusion. The result was a stunning display of ‘geek chic’ that captured the world’s attention. I still recall the thrill of seeing myself on the front page of US Weekly that night after the show. Our presence at Comic-Con had expanded beyond the convention, reaching mainstream audiences – an incredible and awe-inspiring experience.”
