Sea of Thieves Has Reportedly Sold Over 1 Million Copies on PS5

As a gamer who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, I’ve seen my fair share of console wars and platform shifts. The latest dance is between Xbox and PlayStation, with Sea of Thieves making quite the splash on the latter. It’s not every day you see a pirate game that manages to rake in over a million units sold on a single platform!

Approximately four months have passed since “Sea of Thieves” embarked on the PlayStation 5 seas, and it has already gained a strong presence there. As per reports from Windows Central, over a million copies of “Sea of Thieves” have been sold exclusively on PS5. It’s essential to mention that Microsoft hasn’t confirmed this figure. Nevertheless, it seems reasonable given that the game was PlayStation’s top-selling title in May and continues to perform well on the platform. Indeed, it appears that releasing “Sea of Thieves” on multiple platforms was a shrewd move by Xbox!

As a passionate gamer, I was thrilled when Sea of Thieves, one of the four Xbox-published games that made their way onto PlayStation 5 this year, joined my gaming library. Alongside Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Grounded, we’re still waiting to hear about how these games are performing on PS5. Regarding Grounded and Pentiment, I can’t say much about their sales on Nintendo Switch either. Interestingly, there were whispers about a possible Sea of Thieves release on Nintendo’s platform in the weeks preceding Microsoft’s announcement. With the impressive sales figures for Sea of Thieves on PS5, it seems plausible that we might see this game sailing onto the upcoming Switch successor, set to be unveiled within the next seven months.

1. The robust sales of Sea of Thieves on PlayStation 5 suggest the game’s longevity and growth, likely expanding its existing substantial fan base. Nevertheless, some Xbox enthusiasts have voiced concerns over Microsoft’s multi-platform approach potentially undermining the Xbox brand as a whole. This week, it was revealed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will arrive on PlayStation 5 next year, taking many fans by surprise. Although an Indiana Jones game is fitting for multiple platforms, delaying the announcement until next year may have helped Xbox boost console sales during this year’s holiday season.

The uncertainty about the future of Xbox consoles persists, but their current games are doing well since they’re now available on multiple platforms. This move appears to be vindicated, yet it remains unclear how it will affect people’s desire to purchase an Xbox console. If all top-tier Microsoft games become playable on PS5 and Sony keeps its exclusives off Xbox, why would one opt for the latter? We can’t predict the future, but there’s a chance this trend could result in Xbox primarily focusing on third-party publishing, much like Sega did at one point.
