SEAL’s Mountain Dew Super Bowl Commercial Has DC Fans Remembering Batman Forever

Among the most eccentric advertisements shown during this year’s Super Bowl was undeniably the Mountain Dew commercial featuring musical legend SEAL being transformed into an actual seal. The metamorphosis of the Grammy-winning artist into a sea mammal left many surprised, and so did the song he performed. A playful rendition of his timeless hit “Kiss from a Rose,” Seal SEAL delivered amusing lyrics such as “I compare it to kiss from a lime, on the bay,” and “My flippers can’t hold Mountain Dew, it slips right on through, what a shame.” Unsurprisingly, this latest commercial has stirred memories among DC fans of the use of “Kiss from a Rose” in the 1995 film Batman Forever.

One user posted, ‘They transformed Seal animorph into a seal performing ‘Kiss From a Rose’!’ This is a memorable advertisement for Mountain Dew.

Another person said, “It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen – a seal performing a Mountain Dew version of ‘Kiss From A Rose’. I can’t help but laugh, even though it might not make sense!

“can’t wait to have kiss from a rose stuck in my head for the next week,” wrote another.

Although not everyone was excited about the advertisement, it didn’t diminish their affection for the Batman movie, as one enthusiast expressed by saying, “The Mtn Dew Seal ad makes me want to rewatch Batman Forever.

Initially, “Kiss from a Rose,” which was sung by Seal before Batman Forever premiered, didn’t gain much popularity and sales were low. However, it wasn’t until director Joel Schumacher added the song to the end credits of the 1995 Batman film starring Val Kilmer that its success skyrocketed. Seal later shared the full story on Instagram following Schumacher’s passing.

In his statement from 2020, Seal shared that the fourth track from his second album debuted at number 60 on the charts, then dropped to around number 80 the following week, effectively marking the end of its run and wrapping up the promotion for that second album. At this time, he was already in the process of creating his third album when he received a call from Mr. Joel Schumacher.

Seal’s manager shared a copy of the song “Kiss from a Rose” with Schumacher, urging him to listen. After it was featured in Batman Forever and climbed the charts, the song went on to win Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Peep the lyrics for the “Kiss From a Rose” vs “Kiss From a Lime” below:

Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby

Baja, Baja, Baja, Baja
Baby, I compare it to a kiss from a lime on the bay
Oooh, the more i think of it, it’s strange I’m a seal yeah,
My flippers can’t hold Mountain Dew, it slips right on through, what a shame

There is so much a seal can tell you
so much he can say
Dew remains, my power, my pleasure, my flame
