The recently released prequel novel of Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games series, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” is slated to appear on the big screen as well. A movie version is set to premiere in November 2026.
Indeed, they were simultaneously unveiled, and filming for the movie had already started prior to the book’s release.
The most recent addition to the dystopian saga centers around a younger version of the character played by Woody Harrelson, as he maneuvers through daily life in District 12, while also confronting the trials within the Hunger Games battlefield.
Nina Jacobson candidly discussed the difficulties of maintaining secrecy around a high-stakes production, as well as selecting an actor fitting for such a renowned figure.
She explained to Variety that this is an entirely unique approach for her, as she’s never before been involved in an adaptation quite like this one. In this case, the script is already complete while the source material (the book) has not been released yet, but there’s still a lot of anticipation surrounding it.
Jacobson was surprised when she got the call so soon after Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ release.
We needed to carry out a covert operation where I visited Collins’ long-term agent’s residence to read the manuscript. This particular book was kept at his house, and it was my turn to do so. Director Francis Lawrence also did the same.
They were “overjoyed,” even though the topic was challenging, and they couldn’t discuss it with anyone else.
Additionally, Jacobson verified that they have made significant progress due to gaining early access to the relevant materials.
As of now, I haven’t shared any details, but I’m excited about the fantastic manuscript I’m still refining. I’ve decided on the settings. I’m nearly there with a book set to release tomorrow.
The process of casting remains somewhat enigmatic, primarily due to the desire to keep potential scripts confidential. Although Jacobson shed some light on what they’re seeking and their plans to appropriately honor Harrelson’s acting, he refrained from mimicking his performance instead.
She stated, “You’re not seeking an actor pretending to be Woody, but rather one who convincingly embodies a younger version of the character, prior to the hardships and emotions caused by the aftermath of the games.
