This article contains references to sexual assault which some readers may find distressing.
The creators behind hit shows like Hanna’s TV version, Speak No Evil, and the renowned Nordic drama Borgen on Netflix are also responsible for Secrets We Keep. This means that you can expect many surprises and unexpected plot developments from this series.
Without a doubt, the Danish six-part series, focusing on the enigmatic vanishing of an au pair in an upscale neighborhood, did not fail to meet expectations.
Currently, as I type this, the show is ranked third on the Top 10 list for Netflix UK, captivating audiences with the powerful acting of Marie Bach Hansen (from The Legacy) and Danica Curcic (from The Kingdom), along with other talented performers.
If you’ve just finished watching Netflix’s thriller series, Secrets We Keep, and are seeking a comprehensive summary of its dramatic finale, here’s a rundown of all the key events that unfolded.
What happened to Ruby?

Previously on the show, it was revealed that the corpse discovered in the marina was none other than Ruby Donna Levkovski, the Filipino au pair. Her disappearance had led to accusations within Copenhagen’s wealthiest district. A DNA test concluded that main suspect Mike (Simon Sears) wasn’t the baby’s father, making it less probable that he was involved in her demise as well.
However, a new leading suspect came into focus as Oscar (Frode Bilde Rønsholt), the problematic teenager Ruby was tasked with supervising. This development followed his warning to neighbor Viggo (Lukas Zaperka) not to disclose an incriminating video he possessed.
In the sixth episode, it’s made clear that he’s involved, as another paternity test provides definitive evidence. Interestingly, shady businessman Rasmus (Lars Ranthe) also conducted a test to establish his innocence and protect his reputation. However, this move turns against him when it’s disclosed that he’s a partial match, implying that the only suspect left is his son, Oscar.
In a tense interaction with main character Cecilie (Marie Bach Hansen), he implicitly acknowledges sexually assaulting Ruby in her kitchen. His chilling explanation is, “She’s paid to like me,” which, similar to the impactful series Adolescence on Netflix, seems to underscore the destructive power of incel ideology.
How do Oscar’s parents react?

Given their affluent background, it’s not surprising that the Hoffmanns decline any responsibility regarding Ruby’s pregnancy and mysterious death. They swiftly hired lawyer Mike, who happens to be married to Cecilie and has a past conviction for rape as a teenager.
In reality, they concoct an abhorrent scheme to falsely accuse the victim of being the culprit, claiming that Ruby behaved inappropriately towards a minor and exploited them sexually.
Rasmus scolds Katarina (Danica Curcic) too, blaming her for not stopping Oscar’s fall into wickedness. He snaps at her, saying “You were supposed to prevent this!” before announcing their son will be sent to a prestigious boarding school. Even more disconnected from the truth, they opt to attend Ruby’s funeral; however, the heartbroken community of au pairs swiftly asks them to leave.
What happened to Angel?

Ruby’s most trusted friend and co-au pair, Angel (Excel Busano), naturally feels devastated following the tragic event. However, her feelings deepen into hopelessness when she is deemed unnecessary for their roles.
During a rather intense farewell conversation, Cecile first tells Angel that she desires to devote more time to her son. However, it’s later revealed that her unusually close relationship with the preteen boy named Viggo – they frequently slept in the same bed and she accepted a substantial amount of money from him – has raised some eyebrows and concerns.
Angel vigorously contends that she’s unjustifiably penalized for Oscar’s wrongdoings. However, Cecilie, who was offended by Angel’s deceit regarding her childlessness, remains resolute in her stance.
Was Oscar the only guilty party?

Since Mike and Cecilie felt Viggo lacked the strength to testify about seeing the video of the rape, it seemed like the Hoffmanns had managed to escape the cover-up. However, unexpectedly, Kat admitted her involvement during a final chat with Cecilie, incriminating herself in the process.
At Oscar’s farewell gathering, Cecilie confronts Kat after he shares that Ruby had a heated argument with her mother on the night she went missing, which contradicts the previously accepted narrative. When asked whether she was aware of the rape, Kat remains evasive with her response. However, when the conversation shifts to Ruby’s demise and any potential involvement, Kat cryptically says, “What if I did?” She further stokes suspicion by commenting on how men believe problems will resolve themselves, implying that she may have taken Ruby’s life without Rasmus’ awareness.
Was Kat intentionally manipulating the woman who had once been her closest friend but now seemed more like an adversary in the unfolding story? Was Ruby, a devout believer grappling with her predicament and poor counsel from her priest, convinced that ending her life was the only viable solution? Or did one or multiple members of the Hoffmans perhaps commit murder as well as other crimes?
Intriguingly, it seems the creators of Secrets We Keep intentionally leave audiences in suspense, possibly hinting at potential future episodes.
