See Denzel Washington Seemingly Have Tense Interaction With Photographer On The Red Carpet (According To A Lip Reader)

At the Cannes Film Festival, which is typically an event to showcase some of the top films from the beginning of the year, it’s common to find disagreements because of the large number of people gathered there. A recent encounter on the red carpet between Denzel Washington and others didn’t go as planned for all parties involved.

A clip has been spreading rapidly online on X where Denzel Washington seems to be having a heated exchange with someone during the premiere of his latest film with Spike Lee, titled “Highest 2 Lowest.” In the video, Washington can be seen gesturing towards an individual and speaking in a manner that suggests he is not pleased. Give it a watch.

A lip reader named Jeremy Freeman was hired by The Daily Mail to decipher what Washington was communicating to the photographer. According to Freeman’s interpretation, following Denzel’s turn towards the photographer, it appears that he said:

Hold up, hold up, please don’t touch me anymore. I’m addressing you now, so can we just pause for a moment? Stop, stop what you’re doing, stop it right there. I really mean it, let’s take a step back.

Upon revisiting the video, it’s clear that someone extends their hand and taps Denzel on the arm, presumably trying to prompt him for a photo, which seems to have upset the Oscar winner, sparking a heated argument. Intriguingly, the photographer appears to be the only one who remains calm throughout this incident, even attempting to touch Denzel’s arm again later on.

Celebrity encounters can sometimes be quite lively, as it isn’t unusual for photographers to become pushy in their pursuit of a good shot or for celebrities to respond defensively to these advances. Red carpet events are bustling environments where everyone is trying to catch the stars’ attention for an interview or a photo opportunity.

Previously, instances where celebrities and photographers clashed have sometimes escalated into legal battles. For example, Justin Bieber was sued due to an incident where he allegedly ran over a photographer’s foot while trying to take a picture. Similarly, other famous personalities have resorted to filing lawsuits when photographers invaded their privacy or exceeded acceptable boundaries.

It’s reasonable to believe that many people would concur: Denzel’s reaction of feeling upset after being casually grabbed is understandable. Most individuals wouldn’t welcome being touched by strangers, regardless of the setting, especially in a public place like a red carpet, where one anticipates social interaction with others. Famous individuals retain their personal space just as anyone else does.

It’s strongly desired that this red carpet interaction between photographers and celebrities is the least tense one possible. Cannes is meant to be a festive occasion for movies and their creators, and I, personally, wish we could allow them some space beyond the usual question-answering and picture-taking. If physical contact is necessary, consider a handshake or a high five instead.
