As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for nostalgia and a soft spot for the Marvel Universe, I find myself quite intrigued by Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” With his mustache reminiscent of his iconic roles in “Game of Thrones,” “Narcos,” and “The Mandalorian,” he brings a unique charm to the character that I believe will resonate with fans.
It’s quite imaginable that Pedro Pascal could embody the character of a seasoned and occasionally bearded Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in the Fantastic Four. Although fans at San Diego Comic-Con and Disney’s D23 convention were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of footage from Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps – showcasing Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach dressed in the classic 1960s style of their characters – those watching at home had to use their imagination to envision how these four might appear in this futuristic reimagining of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of catching a glimpse of Pascal’s transformation as Reed Richards, thanks to a video shared by him on behalf of the CNN Heroes program. This sneak peek showcases Pascal with a dashing pencil mustache, reminiscent of his distinctive looks from shows like Game of Thrones, Narcos, and The Mandalorian.
In contrast to his ’60s comic book character, the character Reed Richards sporting a mustache is a more recent development: Reed typically kept a clean-shaven face until the mid-’90s, when a time-traveled (and bearded) Reed reappeared with the team after a two-year hiatus in Fantastic Four #407. He resumed his clean-shaven appearance in later issues of Fantastic Four #413, but he grew a beard again when Marvel restarted the Fantastic Four comic series following Secret Wars in 2018. Reed was seldom illustrated with facial hair during the ’60s, although he had beard stubble in the Galactus Trilogy (Fantastic Four #48-50) and in Fantastic Four #67 from 1967.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comic books that kick-started the Marvel Comics Universe era, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will signal the commencement of MCU Phase 6. The film, helmed by director Matt Shakman (WandaVision), is set in a captivating 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic setting according to the plot summary. The characters of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are introduced as they grapple with their most formidable challenge yet. Amidst juggling their duties as superheroes, they must also uphold the power of their family bond to protect Earth from a ravenous cosmic deity known as Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his cryptic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). To make matters worse, Galactus’ intention to consume the entire planet along with everyone on it becomes intensely personal.
In Shakman’s words at San Diego Comic-Con, “The ’60s to me are not just about visual appeal but rather embody optimism.” This era represents gazing towards the stars and harboring dreams of space travel. It’s about believing that with the right attitude and intellect, you can accomplish anything – a sentiment that mirrors the essence of Fantastic Four. Therefore, our goal is to encapsulate the spirit and mood [of the 1960s].
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to open in theaters July 25, 2025.
