As a huge fan of biopics and films based on true stories, I have been absolutely fascinated by the remarkable transformations some actors have undergone to portray iconic figures in cinema. Their dedication and commitment to bringing these individuals’ stories to life on screen never ceases to impress me.

The first full look at Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan just came blowin’ in the wind..

As a seasoned film critic with a deep appreciation for both music and acting, I’ve seen my fair share of trailers that promise intrigue and deliver little substance. But the first teaser for “A Complete Unknown,” released on July 24, left me genuinely excited.

An biography film portrays Dylan’s initial musical journey in New York City. This narrative encompasses the pivotal moment at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where the Minnesota-born artist, primarily known for acoustic tunes, astonished everyone by playing an electrified guitar set and causing a stir in the folk music world.

In the trailer, a voice shares, “Suddenly, he appeared and played us a song out of the blue. It was Chalamet’s Dylan, near the Chelsea Hotel where artists once lived. In that instant, we sensed a hint of what was to come.”

At a later point, he is seen entertaining some friends in his own home. Towards the end, he casually remarks, “That’s it for now.”

The film will explore more than just Dylan’s musical journey as suggested in the trailer. It also portrays his romantic relationship with Sylvie Russo, a fictional character played by Elle Fanning, who is modeled after his real-life girlfriend Suze Rotolo during that time. Sylvie’s image graces the cover of Dylan’s 1963 album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

In addition, the film “A Complete Unknown,” helmed by James Mangold, boasts cameos from his acquaintances of that period. The ensemble comprises Monica Barbaro portraying Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook depicting Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy embodying Woody Guthrie.

Mangold, the director of “Logan,” sought Dylan’s approval for the film by consulting with him at the age of 81. Impressed, Mangold also commended Chalamet’s acting skills as portraying the rocker.

In his conversation with Rolling Stone, he expressed, “Timmy’s portrayal of a 19-year-old carnival worker telling stories has evolved into an iconic figure that resonates with us. Although it may not be evident from trailers or images, the way Timmy develops this character is a remarkable display of acting skill in my eyes.”
