In 2024, as per Metacritic, a well-known review aggregator site, Sega emerged as the highest-ranked video game publisher.
2024 saw Metacritic release their annual ranking of video game publishers on a Wednesday, offering insights into which companies boasted higher average ratings for their games throughout the entire year.
Metacritic assigns scores to each game it tracks, with the score reflecting the overall quality of reviews it receives. Additionally, it awards extra points if a game’s average rating is 90 or higher.
Sega thrived primarily due to several notable video games, including the highly praised role-playing titles “Yakuza: Like a Dragon” (developed by Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio) and “Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster” (from their Atlus subsidiary).
Last year’s second place contender was Capcom, who took the top spot in 2023 according to Metacritic. In 2024, Capcom maintained their strong lineup with games such as Dragon’s Dogma 2.
In the year 2024, Sony secured the fourth position in the industry, significantly boosted by the triumph of Team Asobi’s Astro Bot. This game, subsequently, was honored with the prestigious titles of Game of the Year at The Game Awards and the 28th D.I.C.E. awards.
It’s important to mention that games published by both Bungie (a subsidiary) and PlayStation Studios were included in the Sony total, as Bungie continues to release titles independently of PlayStation Studios.
Microsoft found itself in the ninth spot, boasting an impressive lineup of critically acclaimed titles like MachineGames’ Indiana Jones: The Great Circle, along with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 from Treyarch and Raven Software.
Microsoft follows a strategy similar to Sony’s, where they consolidate their various publishing labels. This means that Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, Activision Publishing, and Blizzard Entertainment are now all grouped together, represented by a single banner.
Nintendo ranked at the 22nd spot this time, slightly lower than its typical position, primarily because it didn’t release many big-scale games last year. It’s quite probable that this dip in rank is due to Nintendo focusing on preparing several significant titles for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
An interesting assortment to look through
When evaluating game reviews, I tend to be wary about overinterpreting the scores because, although I assign scores myself while reviewing, I personally don’t favor reducing complex experiences into simple numbers. However, I find the data to be intriguing and worth examining.
Presently, Sega’s Japanese brands are thriving impressively, and the work of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio stands out as truly remarkable. This team is almost churning out Like a Dragon sequels annually, all while maintaining a consistently high level of quality.
Since the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017, which rejuvenated the survival-horror series for Capcom, they have continued their winning streak and this trend is unlikely to slow down in 2023. This is particularly true given that Monster Hunter Rise has just been launched to rave reviews.
It’s possible that Sega and Capcom will work together and potentially claim the first and second positions on Metacritic by 2025. I can’t predict the future, but I’m excited to see what unfolds over the next year.
