Lately, renowned gaming company SEGA has disclosed through @Wario64 on Twitter that they have registered a new trademark for an upcoming project titled ‘Yakuza Wars’. As reported by Noisy Pixel, this trademark was officially submitted on July 26, 2024, and made public on August 5, 2024.
At present, SEGA hasn’t shared any details beyond the title about what their current project is all about.
Based on its title, it seems quite plausible that ‘Yakuza Wars’ could be a fresh undertaking associated with Sega’s well-liked Yakuza series (previously recognized as Yakuza in the Western market). The Yakuza series is a collection of action-adventure games and turn-based JRPGs, which chronicle the intricate, eccentric, and heartbreaking lives of diverse former members of the yakuza crime family such as the stoic Kiryu Kazuma or the enthusiastic Ichiban Kasuga.
Enthusiasts on Reddit are musing that ‘Yakuza Wars’ might be a mobile game, much like Pokémon GO or Monster Hunter, where you traverse different locations to gather SEGA-themed items inspired by classic SEGA games. As you journey, you encounter and combat yakuza, criminals, and other nefarious characters.
It’s not necessarily the case that a trademark like ‘Yakuza Wars’ will always correspond to the title of an upcoming Like a Dragon game. Instead, it could potentially be a fresh addition to SEGA’s Sakura Wars series, which features turn-based strategies and action games where players participate in wars using giant mechs. Additionally, romantic elements are woven into these stories as well. In this scenario, Noisy Pixel is speculating that ‘Yakuza Wars’ could be a new installment within the Sakura Wars franchise.

Over the past few months, I’ve learned that Sega intends to bring the beloved Like a Dragon series to the big screen. A live-action TV show adaptation of the franchise, titled ‘Yakuza: Like a Dragon,’ is slated to debut on Amazon Prime on October 25, 2025.
As a gaming enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in various games, I can only speculate about what ‘Yakuza Wars’ might be. Given my extensive experience with the Yakuza series, it’s not unreasonable for me to assume that it could potentially be another Like a Dragon game. However, considering Capcom’s history of creating unique and original titles, there’s also a strong possibility that this could be an entirely new concept centered around the yakuza. Only time will reveal the truth, and I eagerly await the final product to see which direction they take with this mysterious title.
