As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Sonic Superstars left me feeling a tad disheartened, much like Shuji Utsumi admitted in his recent interview with Eurogamer. Compared to the stellar performance of Sonic X Shadow Generations, Superstars felt more like a shadow of its former glory.
According to SEGA president Shuji Utsumi, Sonic Superstars falls short when compared to their latest Sonic game, Sonic X Shadow Generations, which he describes as “exceptional.” Utsimi acknowledges that the issues with Superstars stem from the caliber of work produced by the studio.
During an extensive chat with Eurogamer (thanks to VGC), the discussion naturally veered towards Sonic. Utsumi expressed that while working on Sonic Frontiers, they aimed to be creative; however, Sonic Superstars didn’t meet expectations and fell short of what was promised compared to our previous delivery. The president of SEGA believes the key to success lies in adopting a transmedia approach.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about our latest offerings – Sonic X Shadow Generations and the upcoming Sonic movie! We’re venturing into the realm of transmedia storytelling now, where movies and games complement each other to create something grander. However, it all boils down to the quality of the game itself. If the game isn’t outstanding, the transmedia impact won’t be either.
Noteworthily, SEGA attributed the poor sales of Superstar during its debut to the close release timing and superior quality of Super Mario World.
