Titled “I Said I Love You First“, her latest album – a joint production with partner Benny Blanco – has been released. This work offers a personal glimpse into her romantic journey, encompassing both the present and past, as well as hinting at the direction her music is moving towards.

In truth, Selena openly discussed that this album was a journey for her to find a fresh sound, with Benny’s assistance along the way.

Admittedly, I was feeling quite frustrated and a bit bewildered about where my musical journey should lead next,” Selena Gomez shared with Rolling Stone, revealing her state of mind prior to the release of her album. “I struggled to define my unique sound.

Nevertheless, though it seemed like she was finding her rhythm musically, Benny noticed how swiftly his partner adapted to the situation.

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Selena expressed that she feels more at ease in a lower pitch and gentler timbre for this upcoming album. Additionally, it delves sincerely into the impact of her public life on her personal growth.

To begin with, the opening track on the album, titled “Younger and Hotter Than Me,” serves as a tribute to Selena’s journey through fame while also reflecting on the highs and lows of a past love.

In a sneak peek video prior to the album’s release, she explained that the music encapsulates various emotions she’s experienced, if you catch my drift. She admits she’s not exactly the life of the party, being quite socially awkward. Instead, she tends to gravitate towards those who are typically solitary, preferring quiet conversations in secluded corners rather than mingling with the crowd. In her words, she hasn’t always felt like she belongs.

Or, for example, take “Scared of Loving You” as seen from Benny’s perspective.

The producer expressed that line, “‘I’m not afraid of dying young or anyone,’ particularly resonates with him,” indicating that it had a profound impact on him. He added that Selena’s unique perspective, stemming from the hardships she has faced throughout her life, allows her to make such profound statements because she never complains about anything.

In her own words, the second verse – where she sings “If I throw a tantrum and it’s captured on camera / Will you stand by me? Will you offer your support?” – holds a special place in her heart.

She clarified, “That’s exactly how I would put it to someone. For instance, if I ever get upset, I hope you won’t laugh at me. If I make a mistake and people find out, I just ask that you stand by me. It’s already tough enough for me to deal with it when everyone knows.

However, while “Scared of Loving You” represents a heartfelt admission of fear, both “Sunset Blvd” and “Cowboy” present tantalizing invitations to the audience, as Selena playfully sings in “Cowboy”, she’s not referring to riding horses.

She shared with Spotify before her album’s launch, “I don’t express it frequently, but I have a deep sensual side.” She also mentioned, “I adore romance, and at times I express this affection through my words. It makes me feel empowered and sexy, which I enjoy immensely.

She confessed that she’s become more at ease with experimenting with song lyrics, citing artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX as her inspiration. They’ve been instrumental in creating a path for this style of playful interpretation, she added, explaining that it seems there’s more room for creative freedom.

And, above all, the album acts as an homage to her and Benny’s relationship.

Selena explained, ‘The entire project is a reflection of our narratives, blending his tales with mine. The messages within it hold deeply personal significances for us. As a result, one track might carry two distinct interpretations. I find that adorable,'” she added with a smile.

Hence the title.

“Yeah, guilty as charged,” Selena owned. “I said ‘I love you’ first.”

It’s a lyrical gamble the 32-year-old may not have made in her past.

She acknowledged that she’s grown more at ease with manipulating song lyrics, pointing out artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX – who worked together on “Bluest Flame” – as influences. These artists have, in her words, cleared a path by infusing their lyrics with an interpretive playfulness. She believes there’s now a greater liberty to experiment.

Additionally, it’s tempting to find links within the album that relate to Selena’s history with Justin Bieber, such as “Don’t Wanna Cry” which portrays a tumultuous on-and-off relationship. However, Selena urges listeners not to jump to conclusions based on these connections.

She shared with Spotify that “much of this album doesn’t reflect the typical experiences most people might encounter.” She believes it’s crucial to clarify because she has grown significantly, experienced life with different individuals, navigated transitions with friends, lost some and gained others, and embarked on a completely new chapter in her life.

She mentioned, hinting at Benny, “For me, it encompassed not only our pasts and shared history, but also drew inspiration from friendships and relationships. In fact, certain songs were intended as reflections of my own friendships, and I believe that’s what made the album so significant to me.

Essentially, through tracks such as “Love of My Life” and “Bluest Flame,” the album serves primarily as a tribute to their relationship with her and Benny.

Selena told Rolling Stone, ‘This entire project reflects us.’ It’s a blend of our narratives, and the significance is deeply personal to us. Consequently, one tune might hold two distinct meanings. I believe that’s quite endearing.

Hence the title.
