For the stars of Selling Sunset, airtime is everything.
During a conversation on the remuneration of reality TV stars, Emma Hernan disclosed an interesting detail: she and her fellow cast members receive payment based on each episode they feature in, rather than for every episode they shoot.
As a lifestyle expert, I shared with Vivian Tu, fondly known as “Your Rich BFF,” during our recent chat on the Richer Lives by SoFi podcast, that for this particular show, we’re compensated per episode. The key here is participation: if you’re part of an episode, you’ll be remunerated. However, should your scene not make the final cut, unfortunately, there’s no payment involved.
According to Emma, starting the show was quite costly, which implies there might be some potential risks for the actors.
She clarified that all costs associated with glamour and styling are self-funded, and initially, upon joining the show, she was spending more money than she was earning.
Emma stressed that the program heavily values physical attractiveness, explaining that she needed to work hard to gain its benefits.
She pointed out that the show, “Selling Sunset”, places great emphasis on fashion. Therefore, it’s important for one to present themselves well because they are essentially building their own brand.
She thought aloud, “I’m exposing my personal life, I want to ensure it’s all worth the effort.
For Emma, exposing her personal life to the public has brought about its share of difficulties. Last autumn, her co-star on Selling Sunset, Nicole Young, started a gossip about Emma potentially being involved with a married man during a private conversation. However, Emma defended herself by stating that there was absolutely no truth to these rumors.
In a September 2024 interview with TopMob News, Emma expressed her shock, stating: “I was utterly taken aback by these actions. Throughout the entire season, I had no inkling that such behavior was occurring. I learned about it only moments before, when we received previews. It’s appalling.
Emma’s co-star, Chrishell Stause, publicly backed her friend by sharing with Keltie Knight of TopMob News: “Nicole spread a rumor about my close friend that I know is false. She will be able to demonstrate its falsity, but she wasn’t given the opportunity on the show to do so.
