In Season 14, Death in Paradise presented a formidable challenge for Selwyn as he learned from the top police official that it was time for him to retire, having served faithfully for an impressive half-century.
“But they can’t do this?” said Catherine on first hearing the news.
He replied, suggesting it appears that they both can and do, boils down to a single point: saving money.
At first, he appealed the decision, but his boss was not for turning.
As a passionate cinephile, I took it upon myself to initiate an online campaign, aiming to preserve Sebastian’s position. The response was overwhelming, with countless supporters adding their names to the petition. However, even this heartfelt appeal couldn’t convince the chief to reconsider his decision.
After that, to make things even worse, the obnoxiously self-satisfied Sterling Fox, who is taking over from Selwyn, showed up last week to familiarize himself with the situation.
Indeed, it seemed as though we had bid a final farewell to our long-standing commissioner, who has been an integral part of Death in Paradise since its debut episode.
But in a joyous turn of events, Selwyn seemingly isn’t going anywhere.

In the teaser for the season 14 finale, he reveals that they’ve offered him his job back.
“I’m so happy for you!” squeals Catherine, before giving him a big hug.
Recognizing the significant part Selwyn was yet to fulfill as a commissioner, it became clear that those in power had reassessed their position following his efforts in bringing the individuals accountable for Mervin’s mother’s death to face justice.
In a respectful manner, Mervin noted, “Respectfully speaking, Mr. Fox, it seems that if we were to follow your approach, a man who has committed murder might currently be roaming free. I suspect the chief commissioner would find this information quite intriguing.
“You know what would fix this, Sterling? When you go back to Jamaica, you tell your boss that to avoid any more mistakes like this being made by your good self, he needs to reinstate the commissioner.”
And it seems they’ve seen sense and done just that.
But will Selwyn decide to stay? Or is he now reconsidering his own future?
