Before Thunderbolts even premiered in theaters, Marvel Studios hinted at the arrival of the Sentry (Lewis Pullman), who was said to surpass the combined strength of all the Avengers, including heavyweights like Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). With Thunderbolts now released, we learn more about why Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is promoting the Sentry so heavily. However, given her history of falsehoods and deceit, one might be skeptical of her claims. Still, Thunderbolts reveals that the Sentry’s powers are unlike anything seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it possible that he could indeed be the strongest Avenger.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Thunderbolts*
In the comic book “Thunderbolts”, Robert “Bob” Reynolds assumes the role of the Sentry following sinister human experiments orchestrated by Valentina, who seeks to create a superhero loyal to her and safeguard America’s global interests as the Avengers have disbanded. Towards the end of “Thunderbolts”, Valentina attempts to stage a public showdown on live television between the Sentry and the eponymous group of misfits, showcasing his astonishing powers. However, the plan goes awry when Sentry disregards Valentina’s instructions, leading the Void to manifest, forcing the Thunderbolts into a united stand against a being of god-like power. The initial confrontation between Bob and his former comrades serves as a stark reminder of the Sentry’s immense potential for danger.
Initially, it appears that The Sentry is virtually indestructible, with bullets bouncing off his body and super-soldier punches having no impact on him. Moreover, he exhibits immense strength, effortlessly tossing people about as if they were toys. This alone places The Sentry in a similar league to Thor and Hulk. However, what sets The Sentry apart is his extraordinary speed, moving so swiftly that it seems like teleportation from one location to another within a mere fraction of a second. Furthermore, the MCU’s version of The Sentry boasts formidable telekinetic powers, capable of halting bullets with a thought or manipulating large objects at will. In essence, The Sentry not only possesses raw power but also has an extensive arsenal of abilities he can utilize to his advantage, transforming the surroundings into weapons that he can command.
Should additional control be necessary, the Sentry’s Void form can swiftly transport individuals into a shadow realm, trapping them within their most distressing memories for all eternity, immobilized within a terrifying dreamscape. Given the current circumstances, it appears that Valentina is on target, and the Sentry proves to be more devastating than the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this aligns with the character’s comic book background, where such destructive potential is part of its complex lore.
The Sentry Being Overpowered Is What Makes Him So Interesting
The concept of Sentry revolves around his immense power, capable of resolving problems that commonly challenge Marvel’s heroes. However, Bob’s troubled mind gives rise to the ominous entity known as the Void, posing a catastrophic threat to existence. Therefore, Bob struggles with his past traumas, hindering him from fulfilling his potential as the noble defender of Good that he could become if not for the devastation wrought by the Void and Sentry together.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the portrayal of Sentry/Void deviates from its comic book counterpart in several aspects, but it maintains the fundamental essence of the character. Similar to his comics version, Bob possesses immense cosmic power that can shift the course of any battlefield encounter. However, as using these powers might trigger the Void, he is under constant observation, which significantly restricts him. Thus, despite being potentially stronger than all Avengers collectively, Sentry serves as a final option in the New Avengers’ inventory of weapons.
Thunderbolts* is now available in theaters.
