Sentry: The Game-Changing Hulk Replacement Marvel Fans Have Been Waiting For!

17 years since Mark Ruffalo’s debut as the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the franchise is teeming with Hulk characters. While Bruce Banner-Hulk continues to be a fixture (and will reappear in Avengers: Doomsday), we’ve also been introduced to She-Hulk, Tim Roth’s Abomination, and of course, Thunderbolt Ross made his debut as Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. Additionally, there are other Hulks like Banner’s son Skaar, the peculiar variations from What If…?, and the controversial She-Hulk villain HulkKing.

Even though there are numerous gamma-enhanced characters wandering around the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently, we no longer have the classic Hulk as fans remember and cherish. After the films “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Endgame,” Marvel seemed to focus on finding a way for Bruce Banner to stop transforming into the Hulk, which was not a problem that needed solving in the first place. This is how we arrived at “Smart Hulk,” a solution to a character dilemma that shouldn’t have been addressed.

In essence, although Hulk’s resolution in “Endgame” was beneficial for the plot, it also marked the conclusion of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s captivating character arcs. The struggle between man and beast, between vulnerability and anger, between desiring solitude and a strong desire to safeguard and connect – these were what made Hulk one of the original Avengers’ most intriguing characters. Now that Bruce Banner appears to be at peace as a tranquil genius giant, the MCU is left with a narrative void where that enthralling conflict once thrived.

Indeed, that’s the reason why Thunderbolts* was a significant milestone for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans who appreciate a struggle embodied in their characters. In essence, Lewis Pullman’s Sentry serves as an exceptional substitute for the original Hulk’s character development trajectory.

Sentry Is The Secret Hulk Replacement You’ve Been Waiting For

In essence, Sentry appears as a character with superhuman abilities akin to Superman, but grappling with severe mental health struggles: a being blessed with the might of “a million exploding suns,” whose very persona presents a paradox. He is a high-level superhero cloaked in the fragile, tormented, and ever-fearful shell of a human. Moreover, there’s The Void – the ominous, corrupting core within his psyche that materializes as an uncontrollable, apocalyptic force of annihilation whenever he succumbs to his emotions. Such a blend of vulnerability and immense dark power seems surprisingly relatable, doesn’t it?

It’s possible that the Hulk’s aggressive nature could reemerge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line, offering us a deeper look at Bruce Banner’s internal struggle between tranquility and uncontrollable anger. However, if this doesn’t occur, Sentry might be an exciting alternative to look forward to. In fact, Bob’s journey could surpass that of the Hulk in depth, as his character’s struggles with the Void make for a deeply emotional tug-of-war. Both characters are plagued by their dual identities, but Bob is more likable and already connected to other heroes on a personal level.

As a film enthusiast, I must confess that throughout the films, Hulk remained our hero, and the notion of him turning villain was merely a tantalizing specter for the viewers. The brief glimpse of Savage Hulk in Age Of Ultron left us yearning for more. Yet, despite his monstrous nature, Hulk’s emotions and longing to belong amidst his self-fear evoke a surprising sense of sympathy. In fact, this sympathetic portrayal is far more compelling than the jovial green caricature. Ironically, in his pursuit of humanity, Banner seems to have grown even more alien to us.

Despite the conclusion of Thunderbolts implying Bob has the situation under control, the looming possibility of The Void returning is intrinsic to his character. This ongoing internal struggle, in a man capable of obliterating entire cities on a whim, is exactly what the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been lacking since the Hulk became more domesticated and secure. Interestingly, Sentry isn’t simply another version of the Hulk; he represents a terrifying upgrade. Additionally, it would be thrilling if his growing popularity serves as a reminder to us and Marvel about why the original Hulk was so significant.
