Sentry vs. Thanos: Who Wins the Ultimate MCU Showdown—With or Without the Infinity Gauntlet?

Engaging in discussions about who would win a fight between two notorious comic book villains is an exhilarating pastime. It’s seldom that these antagonists get to square off, but when they do, it’s always electrifying! Matches become even more thrilling when we imagine clashes between Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, as their battles can unfold on the grand stage of cinema. Admittedly, it’s tough to outshine Thanos, the Mad Titan, who managed to erase half of all life in Avengers: Infinity War. It took the combined might of almost the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe to defeat him, as even without the Infinity Stones, his power and resilience are hard to fathom.

In an unexpected turn of events, a fresh contender vies for the crown as the scariest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) antagonist within the ranks of Thunderbolts*. Known as Bob, this newcomer takes on the superhero identity of Sentry. However, his true persona, The Void, proves to be a formidable adversary even for the Thunderbolts team. Although Sentry doesn’t get a chance to display his full potential in Thunderbolts*, if he did, it would put Thanos in a tough spot.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*

Could Sentry From Thunderbolts* Beat Thanos Without the Infinity Gauntlet?

The movie “Infinity War” emphasizes Thanos’ immense power prior to utilizing the Infinity Stones. He infiltrates an Asgardian vessel and, for some time, allows his Black Order to handle matters. Later, he confronts the Hulk, a character known for his immense strength within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it’s surprising to see the Hulk succumb so swiftly to Thanos. Thanos clearly operates on a different level, and only Thor attempts to face him alone afterwards. But given that Sentry is as powerful as Thor, based on Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s statements, it sets up an intriguing matchup between the two.

In a battle between Sentry and Thanos, if Thanos doesn’t have the Infinity Gauntlet, their fight could drag on for quite some time. Eventually, though, the advantage might shift towards Sentry as Thanos will push him to summon The Void. This event may trigger Thanos to confront his most devastating memories, possibly including the destruction of his home planet Titan. Since Thanos isn’t known for his emotional stability, he probably won’t be able to address his traumatic childhood effectively. As a result, Thanos is likely to end up in The Void, facing the very fate he aims to prevent for the rest of the universe.

Can Sentry From Thunderbolts* Beat Thanos With the Infinity Gauntlet?

In my humble opinion, if Sentry fails to confront Thanos before he amasses all the Infinity Stones, their battle will undergo a profound transformation. With the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos wields the ability to manipulate reality itself and create portals across the cosmos, not to mention the immense power surge bestowed upon him by the Power Stone. It’s only due to Thor forging Stormbreaker, an extraordinarily potent weapon, during his journey to Nidavellir alongside Rocket and Groot, that he manages to land any significant blows against Thanos. Sentry, however, lacks access to such god-killing weapons, placing him at a considerable disadvantage in this fight.

In this scenario, Sentry’s action would involve summoning The Void. Similar to their previous encounter without the Infinity Stones, Thanos must confront his inner demons. However, the Reality Stone serves as an unpredictable factor, potentially causing a shutdown and enabling Thanos to flee. With a mere snap of his fingers following that event, Thanos could eradicate Sentry and continue with his plans. The Void might have some surprises in store, but it didn’t demonstrate enough prowess in the Thunderbolts series to be considered the clear winner in a fight against the Mad Titan.

Thunderbolts* is in theaters now.
