Excitingly for Sesame Street enthusiasts, the classic television show is moving to Netflix, offering not only beloved old episodes but also fresh, newly created ones.
The announcement on the official Netflix UK account was made in an amusing manner through a video featuring Cookie Monster eating the Netflix symbol, accompanied by the text: “N IS FOR NETFLIX! Starting later this year, SESAME STREET will be available on Netflix with both new and classic episodes.
Sesame Street’s official account shared the news: Starting now, all new episodes of Sesame Street will be available on Netflix globally, along with classic episodes! Additionally, new episodes will be simultaneously released on PBS Stations and PBSKIDS platforms in the United States to maintain our long-standing partnership of over 50 years.
As a cinephile, I find it fascinating that Sesame Street, a beloved educational series, is able to persist in its mission of fostering smarter, stronger, and kinder kids globally, thanks to the unusual alliance between Netflix, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – a trio that embodies public-private cooperation at its finest.
Upon hearing the news, Paula Kerger, head of PBS, expressed in a statement her firm conviction that our children’s educational programming is one of the key elements of our service to the American public. For over fifty years, Sesame Street has been a vital component of this crucial work.
It’s heartening to carry forward our alliance, as we strive to make lasting differences in the lives of children for the future.
Although primarily designed for younger viewers, the enduring popularity of the classic kids’ program Sesame Street demonstrates that it remains entertaining for fans spanning all ages.
Originally aired in 1969, this show has consistently received acclaim for its educational approach, earning countless Emmys and several Grammys for some of its iconic tunes.
Starting from 2020, Sesame Street shifted its home to HBO Max. However, when HBO and Max decided against renewing the contract for the show, it was Netflix who took over.
As it enters its 56th season, each installment will focus on a single 11-minute narrative. The iconic Cookie Monster’s Food Truck and Elmo’s World segments will make their comeback, while Halcyon Person takes the helm as the new head writer.
Currently, there isn’t a specific release date for Sesame Street announced yet, but it’s expected to come out later in the year, so stay tuned!
