Sesame Street Looking for New Home After Warner Bros. Passes on Renewing the Series

As someone who grew up with Big Bird, Elmo, and the entire gang of Sesame Street, this news has left me feeling a bit like Oscar the Grouch lost his trash can. The end of their partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery is indeed a significant change for a show that has been a staple in children’s education for generations.

After some changes, Sesame Street and Warner Bros. Discovery are going separate ways, meaning the cherished children’s program and its endearing characters will find a new home. Instead of renewing the agreement for the show (as reported by THR), Warner Bros. Discovery has chosen to focus less on children’s programming. Sesame Street and Warner Bros. Discovery first joined forces under a five-year contract signed in 2019, which placed the program on Max (formerly HBO Max at that time). However, the upcoming 55th season will mark the end of its run there.

Although the exact release date of Season 55 is yet to be determined, you can expect Sesame Street content to remain available on the service for some time. In fact, HBO Max has secured rights to air episodes from the Sesame Street library up until 2027, so while new episodes won’t roll out after Season 55, fans can enjoy classic content for a few more years.

A representative from Max shared a statement expressing their delight about continuing to offer some Sesame Street library series in the U.S. They explained that with the launch of Max, they’ve found themselves needing to concentrate on content for adults and families. As a result, new episodes from Sesame Street are currently not at the heart of their strategic plans.

Regarding Sesame Street, the program is thrilled to carry on its collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery until 2027. However, it’s also seeking a fresh partner for its main series. At this moment, details about season 56 are scarce, but we do know that the show plans to give more emphasis to storytelling, although exactly what that entails is still uncertain.

“We are excited to extend our 10-year partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, keeping ‘Sesame Street’s’ iconic library available on Max through 2027,” a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop said in a statement. “We will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that ‘Sesame Street’ reaches as many children as possible for generations to come.”

Currently, each episode continues to broadcast on PBS even after its initial airing on Max. However, this is expected to shift post-season 55. With Sesame Street’s extensive library and renowned brand name, numerous potential contenders would be eager to acquire it. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, who have already demonstrated a strong interest in children’s content, are likely among them. Both services would undoubtedly appreciate the opportunity to host new episodes of such a prestigious kids’ show, as well as the vast library that would likely come with it. It remains unclear if Warner Bros. Discovery’s licensing agreement extending up to 2027 might have any impact on the availability of this library.
