In a chat with ComicBook before the launch of Season 2, creator Dan Erickson shared his admiration for his cast’s ability to manage all the secrets in the show. He mentioned that each actor has unique insights into the storyline and future events – much like the fictional ‘severance‘ process in the series, where characters maintain separate personas for work and personal life, which ideally should not intermingle. The question remains: How do they keep it all straight during a large-scale TV production?
According to Dan Erickson’s explanation, the secretive workings of backstage management and acting procedures determine which individuals are privy to information regarding future developments in the show ‘Severance’.
Erickson explained that every situation is unique, and it’s amusing because some actors prefer to be fully informed while others prefer less detail. There are a few actors who are also executive producers, and they seem to know a bit more due to their roles. However, for other actors, especially those playing dual characters in this series where each character has their own secrets, knowing too much could potentially confuse them, as they already have to keep track of the storyline without worrying about future events.
In summary, Erickson suggested that there are two main actors who seem to have a general idea of the ultimate goal, and that’s all we know for now. As stated by the showrunner, Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette are both actors and producers on the show. Additionally, Ben Stiller serves as an executive producer, director, and has an unaccredited voiceover role as Kier Eagan. It remains uncertain how significant that voiceover role might evolve throughout the series, potentially leading to Stiller’s on-screen appearance in the future.
In this sci-fi thriller, titled “Severance,” the story revolves around a mysterious biotech firm named Lumon Industries, which resembles a cult and was initially founded by Eagan (portrayed by Stiller). This enigmatic company has innovated a process that splits an individual’s mind, creating two distinct personas: one for professional life and another for personal interactions. These personas are referred to as “innies” and “outies,” allowing each actor to portray two different versions of the same character. The intricate network of secrets is truly captivating, yet as Erickson notes, it’s also a challenging juggling act for the actors themselves.
The first season of “Severance” garnered massive acclaim, resonating deeply with viewers, critics, and awards committee members. With high expectations for its second season, it’s set to debut on Apple TV+ this Friday, January 17th, releasing episodes weekly until the finale on March 21st.
