In a chat with ComicBook, creator of the “Severance” series Dan Erickson has finally shed light on the intriguing “waffle party” scene. While he kept mum about potential revelations in Season 2, he did share some enlightening details regarding its impact on the characters and Lumon Industries. Be aware, there are spoilers for the first season of Severance!
In Season 1, Episode 8 titled “What’s for Dinner?”, Erickson humorously admitted, “It’s amusing – many folks are quite angry with me as they claim I’ve spoiled their enjoyment of waffles, which I must admit makes me feel a little guilty.” The scene unfolds when Dylan (Zach Cherry) is given a ‘waffle party’ as a reward for his department achieving its target. He is escorted to the Perpetuity Wing and seated in a replica of Kier Eagan’s childhood bedroom. He is then served waffles, dressed with an Eagan mask, and left alone while others in masks perform what seems like ritualistic seductive dances before him.
In simpler terms, the situation left fans puzzled, and Erickson noted that Lumon intended for its dismissed workers to feel baffled, especially about intimacy. He explained, “To me, it connects with the idea that everything at Lumon is motivated and thus somewhat twisted. We notice this around the point in the season when the waffle party takes place, where a genuine romantic connection between Mark and Helly develops, as well as between Burt and Irving. There’s affection emerging naturally among people, and of course, Lumon aims to suppress it.
Erickson explained further about the waffle party, “One of the main motives behind it is control. They aim to dictate aspects such as sex and love; deciding when they can be experienced and when they cannot, since these elements can function as incentives for work.” He continued, “Various items, from simple pencil erasers to even melon parties, are utilized as incentives in such settings. So, it’s not surprising that sexuality might be employed similarly. However, the way it is presented is both peculiar and unsettling.
Erickson’s observations certainly clarify this puzzling situation, yet he doesn’t reveal whether we’ll uncover more secrets in upcoming episodes. To find out, we’ll just have to wait and watch when ‘Severance’ Season 2 debuts on Apple TV+, starting January 17th, and continues weekly until March 21st. If you haven’t seen it yet, catch up with Season 1, which is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
