Severance Season 2 Finale: Shocking Revelations You Didn’t See Coming!

Warning: This story contains spoilers for episode 10 of Severance season two.

Your outtie got to the bottom of some major Lumon theories.

In the finale of the second season of Severance (streamed on Apple TV+) on March 21st, Mark, portrayed by Adam Scott, finally wrapped up the Cold Harbor project he’s been diligently working on since the first season. This closure provided answers to some significant questions that viewers have pondered throughout the show.

So, what were all the random numbers in the Cold Harbor file?

At the secluded birthing retreat cabins, Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) confided in Mark, along with his sister Devon (Jen Tullock), revealing that the arranged figures symbolized the different moods of her wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman). She explained that Gemma was being experimented on in the basement of the Lumon office building. As Mark scrutinized certain numbers, he acknowledged experiencing those emotions himself and was tasked with sorting them into containers based on categories like pain, malice, and joy, among others.

Every time Mark filled a container with numbers, it sparked a fresh sense of awareness within Gemma that enabled her to mechanically accomplish tasks that might otherwise provoke strong emotions. For instance, in a previous scene from the season, Gemma confided to Mark that she disliked writing thank you notes. Later on, viewers witnessed that as one of the numerous doors she entered for testing, she was being taught to write countless thank you notes until the action no longer elicited disgust.

In the opening of the final episode, Mark had already worked on 24 files, which translated to 24 separate consciousnesses for his wife. As Harmony pointed out, Lumon aimed to ultimately fragment her brain into 25 distinct parts in their conclusion.

Instead, Mark’s exterior self managed to undo the last division by devising a strategy with his inner self, who assisted him in descending to the basement and saving Gemma from the Cold Harbor room. She had been kept there, compelled to disassemble the baby crib the couple had purchased before her harrowing miscarriage and infertility ordeal. This task—a representation of the sorrow she felt over losing Mark and the family they never conceived—served as the ultimate trial to determine if Lumon could successfully eliminate Gemma’s most potent emotion: love.

However, Mark’s quest to rescue Gemma wasn’t just about uncovering Cold Harbor’s truth; it also led his inner self, within the confines of Lumon, to the real intention behind the goats. This revelation was initially made by him and his colleague Helly, portrayed by Britt Lower, during season one, when they stumbled upon it in a secluded office room.

After finishing the file, the Eagan family ended the innie test subject of the experiment by sacrificing it. It appeared that this was done as part of a ritual, which involved the killing of goats.

As a lifestyle expert, I must confess that these disclosures don’t quite wrap up the entire sordid tale of this company’s unscrupulous activities. The series finale concluded without shedding light on Mark’s fate, an enigma that remains unresolved. Intriguingly, Mark’s inner self opted against fleeing the Lumon building with Gemma, his outward counterpart’s wife. Instead, he chose to stay behind with Helly, a woman with whom he has developed feelings. The heart can be a complex and unpredictable entity, indeed.

Additionally, it remains unknown what happens to Irving (John Turturro), having been expelled from Kier following his discovery that Burt (Christopher Walken) wields more authority at Lumon than initially suggested. Meanwhile, the employees who work on the severed floors, including Dylan (Zach Cherry), who returned to his job in the final episode despite attempting resignation in episode nine, can expect repercussions for aiding Mark in fulfilling his task.

Fortunately, Ben Stiller – who was instrumental in directing the final episode, multiple others, and also acts as a producer for the series – has reassured viewers that season three will provide the answers they’ve been waiting for.

He emphasized during his interview with Collider in November that it’s crucial to maintain the audience’s trust by having a clear direction for the work. This has always been essential for us, ensuring we know where our project is ultimately leading.

Ben mentioned, “The duration should match the length of the story, and since we have a general concept of this, we’re aiming for it as we begin our preparations for season three.
