As someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching mind-bending shows and trying to unravel the intricacies of complex plots, I can confidently say that Severance has quickly become one of my favorites. The first season left us with more questions than answers, but that’s what makes it so enthralling!
It’s been a long wait for Severance season 2 – but praise Kier, we finally have a release date!
Actor-director Ben Stiller has shared insights on the significant gap between seasons, as it’s been nearly three years since Season 1 premiered in February 2022, meaning we won’t see Season 2 on Apple TV+ until then.
He shared with Variety: “Recently, it’s been quite challenging and time-consuming to create content for everyone involved. However, we’ve been dedicated to ensuring each season is top-notch. I acknowledge that this process has taken longer than expected, and I too feel the frustration when things take a long time. But I also understand the anticipation of fans wanting the next season as soon as possible.
It’s been quite a journey. I sincerely hope it turns out well. You understand, people anticipate something that matches their past experiences and doesn’t disappoint them. So, I guess the best we can do is strive for excellence in our own perception.
During that very same chat, I, a passionate cinephile, found myself intrigued by the enigmatic hint dropped by our talented actor, John Turturro, who brings Irving to life. He suggested that we’re about to venture into uncharted territories, making the anticipation for the upcoming scenes even more exhilarating.
In simpler terms, “The widely known sci-fi show that gained popularity through word of mouth after its 2022 debut, has Adam Scott playing Mark Scout, the leader of a team at Lumon Industries. Their employees have gone through a procedure called ‘Severance’ which separates their work and personal memories.
As a captivated viewer, I can’t help but wonder when the next chapter unfolds in the intriguing world of Severance. Here’s what I’ve gathered about the anticipated second season:

Production for the second season of the show commenced in October 2022, however, it faced a delay due to rumored creative disagreements and the impact of the Hollywood strikes.
By mid-January 2024, producer Ben Stiller had disclosed that he was actively developing Severance season 2, and even better, Apple TV+ later announced that the project was officially underway with filming.
“This is an action-packed black and white photograph capturing Adam Scott (Mark S) dashing through a long, white corridor. On the frame’s right, you can see a massive camera, hinting that filming for Severance season 2 is underway.
The series wrapped filming in April 2024.
Severance season 2 cast
The confirmed cast list for Severance season 2 is:
- Adam Scott as Mark Scout
- Britt Lower as Helly
- Zach Cherry as Dylan
- John Turturro as Irving
- Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
- Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick
- Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman
- Dichen Lachman as Ms Casey
- Jen Tullock as Devon
- Michael Chernus as Ricken Hale

- Aia Shawkat as TBC
- Bob Balaban as TBC
- Merritt Wever as TBC
- Robby Benson as TBC
- Stefano Carannante as TBC
- John Noble as TBC
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson
Most likely, our main actors headed by Adam Scott and Britt Lower will be coming back. As per reports from Variety in October 2022, we’re also set to welcome some fresh talents to the team.
As a film aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that Gwendoline Christie (of Game of Thrones and Wednesday fame), Alia Shawkat (from Arrested Development), Bob Balaban (known for The French Dispatch), and Merritt Wever (star of Unbelievable) are joining forces in an upcoming project. At this point, however, the characters they’ll be bringing to life still remain a tantalizing enigma.
Nevertheless, a teaser trailer unveiled earlier this year has provided a hint, since Christie’s figure is shown and she cryptically warns Mark and Helly, “It would have been wiser to depart.” Spine-tingling!
Additionally, Robby Benson from “One to One,” Stefano Carannante known for “Mirabilia,” John Noble famous for “The Lord of the Rings,” and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson recognized in “The Tourist” are also on board.
Since some other characters who were introduced during Season 1 met their end, it’s uncertain whether they’ll still play a role in the narrative. For instance, Petey, portrayed by Yul Vazquez, though he perished in Season 1, remained present through flashbacks and archival footage.

Severance season 2 plot
We finally have some confirmed details about season 2! The released logline is: “Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.”
Additionally, we’ve gathered hints from several previews. Earlier, Apple TV+ shared a glimpse into the series, displaying Mark’s return to Lumon. Tramell Tillman’s character, Milchick, welcomed him with the phrase: “It’s good to have you back. It’s been a while.
In a different part of the video, Mark alternates among his multiple identities as he reclines on a conference table, eventually making a dash down a corridor.
The first season of Severance concludes with quite an unexpected twist, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the arrival of a second season to continue the storyline from where it ended. So, fans can express their gratitude to creator Kier for making this happen.
In the concluding episode, after spending a while exploring Mark Scout’s ‘Outie’ existence and Mark S’s ‘Innie’ world separately, the narratives converge. For the very first time, ‘Innie’ Mark jolts awake inside his physical body, located outside the Lumon structure.
Additionally, it’s not just him – due to the operation of the Overtime protocol by Dylan (Zach Cherry), both Helly and Irving also find themselves in their physical forms outside, or ‘outie’, as well, along with him in their MDR team.
In a simpler phrase: John Turturro’s character, Irving, uncovers eerie artwork depicting a foreboding hallway in the Lumon building. He later locates his friend Burt (played by Christopher Walken), but learns that he has an outside partner. Despite this, Irving prepares to confront Burt as the story concludes.
In a similar vein, Helly (played by Britt Lower) uncovers some stark realities. It transpires that her ‘Outie’ is no one other than Helena Egan, a senior member of Lumon’s staff who underwent the process of ‘severance’ as a publicity stunt.
Onstage at a fancy gala, she exposes the truth of the severed employees’ miserable existences.
Meanwhile, Mark (Adam Scott) tells his sister the truth, only to discover even more lies.
Looking at a picture of his spouse, it dawns on him that what many, including the high-ups at Egon, have long been aware of – she is indeed alive, continuing her employment at Lumon in the enigmatic role of Ms. Casey (portrayed by Dichen Lachman), the elusive wellness representative.
In a rush, Mark S frantically attempts to convey that she’s still alive just moments before he loses consciousness, yelling “She’s alive!” as Dylan gets taken down in the Egon command center.
In total, there are numerous storylines to explore in the upcoming season. Will Helly and Mark’s disclosures lead to public outrage against Severance? Did Irving manage to contact Burt? And what penalties will the MDR employees face at Lumon when they return for their next work period, considering their severed state?
I’ve shared some hints about what you might find in the next chapter, implying that it will provide answers, as well as spark new queries.
As a dedicated fan myself, I firmly believe that it’s crucial for us to get closure on the lingering questions from the show. However, I also understand that we have a duty to address these matters in a manner that is not only accountable but also engaging and enjoyable for the audience. That’s what I expressed when I spoke with Deadline.
One enjoyable aspect of the program lies in the diverse range of interpretations, theories, and opinions it sparks among viewers. Consequently, there’s an obligation on our part to consider these perspectives carefully. I can assure you that Dan Erickson, the creator, has pondered over these ideas extensively, giving them much thought throughout numerous years.
In conversation with Collider, Turturro expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s going to be quite intriguing! There are plenty of fascinating elements that fans of the series will appreciate, and it certainly moves forward by offering a fresh perspective on the characters.
He added: “We felt that there’s a balance [to aim for], because if too many questions are answered, then you don’t have a chance to really speculate and live in the world as much.
“We’re working on finding the right approach to navigate through this world, maintaining harmony while still making it enjoyable and fulfilling for us.
Additionally, we’re yet to uncover the specific projects MDR is involved in at Lumon, the circumstances surrounding Mark’s wife’s survival, the reason behind Ms. Cobell (Patricia Arquette) scrutinizing Mark and her interactions, or the strange occurrences involving the baby goats on the farm.
Simply put, we’ve got plenty left to cover, but luckily, we’ll have additional episodes to untangle everything. Let’s toast to marathon discussions ahead!
