Severance Season 2: The Fan Theory That Will SHOCK You Is TRUE!

Since the second season of “Severance” debuted on AppleTV+ this year, a significant fan theory has surfaced within the community. As Mark S. (Adam Scott), Dylan G. (Zach Cherry), and Irving B. (John Turturro) all went back to work at Lumon in the aftermath of season 1’s dramatic cliffhanger, there’s been something suspicious about their colleague Helly R. (Britt Lower). The finale of season 1 of “Severance” provided a significant revelation regarding Helly: she was actually secretly Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon’s CEO and someone who had been severed for public relations purposes. With each new episode of “Severance”, fans have been speculating that the Helly R. who returned to the severed floor in season 2 might not be who she claimed to be, and could instead have been Helena herself, simply pretending to be someone else. Now, we finally have an official response. [SPOILERS AHEAD]

In the second season’s newest episode of Severance, the team participates in an Outdoor Retreat Team Building Event (ORTBO) provided by Lumon. Although presented as a generous opportunity for “Innies” to explore the outside world, this excursion is fraught with more eerie stories about Kier Eagan and a fresh addition to The Compliance Handbook. Curiosity piques Irving’s interest in these narratives, yet his doubts regarding Helly R., who reappeared in the season 2 premiere, persistently intensify.

Severance season 2: What happens on the ORTBO?

That evening, Irving questions Helly about the events when the Overtime Contingency was activated, and they ventured outside for the first time. He finds it hard to believe her claim of encountering a “night gardener” while she was asleep, which he considers implausible. However, his colleagues rally around Helly’s defense near the campfire. Then, in what seems like the final straw, Helly responds to Irving’s doubts by saying: “We all know that Irving is upset because he can’t see Burt anymore.

In season 1, Irving’s secret relationship with Burt (played by Christopher Walken) causes him distress, leading him to retreat into the woods. The following day, after encountering a woodland vision of Burt and an embodiment of one of the four temperaments, Wrath, Irving finds himself alone with Helly. Near a waterfall said to hold great meaning for Kier, he challenges her about her identity once more, but then reveals a crucial piece of information based on something she had previously said.

Irving responds, “What you just told me was harsh, and it’s not like Helly to be cruel. If you’re not Helly, then who else could it be? Who has the ability to separate their consciousness from their body and leave it on a disconnected floor?

From there, Irving takes a startling action, pulling Helly roughly by the nape of her neck and leading her towards the icy water in front of them. He starts calling out for Mr. Milchick, managing to attract not only their supervisor on the floor that’s been cut off but also two other colleagues, Mark S. and Dylan G. As they gather and watch from above, Irving demands that Mr. Milchick turns Helly around, claiming she’s an “outside” person, a “mole”, an “Eagan”. He warns that he will kill her if Mr. Milchick doesn’t activate her severed chip immediately.

In simpler and more conversational language: Clearly, Dylan and Mark are upset about this turn of events, thinking that Irving is overreacting and mistaken. As Irving keeps shouting, he pulls Helly’s head out of the freezing cold water so she can take a breath, causing her to yell at Mr. Milchick, “Do it, Seth!” Milchick retrieves a walkie talkie from his belt and asks someone unknown to turn off the “Glasgow Block.” While Irving holds Helly’s face underwater, the familiar sound of the severed floor elevator goes off, confirming to the viewers that Helena Eagan had been pretending to be Helly R whenever she was on the severed floor in Severance season 2.

“Helly R. is Helena” theory confirmed by Severance season 2

Irving expresses his apologies to Helly, who seems bewildered about her location and current circumstances. You might remember that during a Lumon event, the Overtime Contingency was deactivated while Helly attempted to expose the entire Severance process to the public. This action led to a significant surprise when Helly awoke to find her head submerged in cold water outside. The revelation of Helly’s true identity as Helena doesn’t conclude the episode, as Mr. Milchick has one more surprise – dismissing Irving B. from Lumon, which essentially spells doom for him.

The shocking disclosure that Helena, who we’ve known as Helly throughout the series, is actually her true self will have significant repercussions in the upcoming season 2 of Severance. Dylan G., Mark S., and the rest of the cast will likely question everything that has transpired so far, including their roles and relationships within the company. The absence of two team members, Helena and her identity Helly, will undoubtedly disrupt the work of the Macrodata Refinement team, potentially halting their crucial tasks and leaving lasting effects on their lives as severed employees. This revelation brings forth a host of questions, such as how Lumon will respond, whether Mark will ever meet Helena again, and most crucially, how this discovery might influence his pursuit of Ms. Casey, or his wife Gemma, in the series.

Severance debuts new episodes on Apple TV+ every Thursday.
