The second season of the show “Severance” provided answers to several intriguing fan queries, unveiling the enigma surrounding the MDR work and the Testing Floor, as well as shedding light on the role of the Mammalian Nurturable department and why Cold Harbor mattered so much to Lumon. However, the world of “Severance” remains veiled in mystery, leaving numerous intriguing plot threads for Season 3 to delve into. Despite the series seeming to be nearing its conclusion, the season finale failed to address some glaring unanswered questions. With the entire second season now available on Apple TV+, it’s high time we delve into the significant queries that arose from “Severance” Season 2.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Severance Season 2, Episode 10
In the concluding episode of Severance’s second season, Adam Scott’s character, Outie Mark, teams up with Mark S. in a mission to free Gemma/Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman) from the Testing Floor. To aid her partner, Helly R., portrayed by Britt Lower, ignited an inner-world rebellion, which saw the fresh members of Choreography and Merriment banding together with the MDR team to challenge Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman). As we look forward to the third season of Severance, we hope it will provide answers to our burning questions.
What’s Going to Happen to Gemma?
In Season 2 of Severance, we discover that Gemma spent a grueling two years on Lumon’s Testing Floor. Known as their star test subject, the MDR team crafted numerous personas for Gemma, each trapped within the four walls of a single room where she endured a continuous ordeal akin to an endless dental appointment and a turbulent flight that never reaches its destination. The objective was to push the limits of human resilience, aiming to find how far the mind could bear pain before the memory barriers set by the severance chip would break.
Gemma serves as evidence of Lumon’s disturbing experiments, which involve kidnapping, imprisoning, and killing people. Devon (Jen Tullock) and Outie Mark aim for Gemma’s release to bring down the Lumon organization and end the severance process. However, since Mark S. insists on staying with Lumon alongside Gemma, she finds herself isolated, unsure of her next steps and how to evade being recaptured by Lumon. The third season of Severance should reconnect Gemma with Devon and depict their efforts (and success or failure) in overthrowing Lumon.
What Is Harmony Cobel’s Plan?
In the second series of Severance, more details were revealed about Harmony Cobel’s (Patricia Arquette) background, showing how she was brainwashed from a young age to adhere to Kier’s teachings. As a result, she permitted the Kiers to claim credit for her development of the severance technology. Towards the end of Severance Season 2, Harmony appears to be working diligently to aid Devon and Alternate Mark in rescuing Gemma. Yet, we are left guessing what Cobel’s ultimate strategy might be.
It’s surprising that Cobel seems determined to undermine Lumon and potentially dismantle the very technology she’s been so deeply invested in, given her meticulous examination of two different versions of Mark during the first season. However, despite no longer sharing Lumon’s goals, Cobel maintains a cryptic demeanor when interacting with Devon and Mark, hinting at secrets she’s keeping hidden. The upcoming Season 3 of Severance might unravel this enigma, showing whether Cobel has been secretly sabotaging Lumon, plotting to deceive Mark, or conducting her own twisted experiments using the severance technology.
Where Is Irving? (And Who Is He Really Working For?)
In Season 2 of “Severance”, character Irving B., portrayed by John Turturro, gave up his life to expose Helena Eagan’s deceit and provide the MDR team with a fighting opportunity. Although he was missing from the season finale, the map he left behind led Mark S. to free Gemma from her subterranean cell. Meanwhile, in the real world, Outie Irving continued his battle against Lumon, communicating with an enigmatic third party over the phone and gathering proof against the corporation. In a bid to protect Irving, Burt (Christopher Walken), a former Lumon henchman, arranged for him to depart on a train, instructing him never to return. As a result, both iterations of character Irving exited the “Severance” stage.
What Is Lumon Really Doing?
In the series Severance, Lumon appears to have a complex identity. On one hand, it resembles a cult, with its employees seemingly adoring the questionable theories of their founder, Kier. This results in comical and unsettling rituals carried out by the upper management on the Severed Floor and beyond. On the other hand, Lumon operates as an extremely capitalistic entity, employing bizarre philosophies to conceal the oppressive labor practices and unethical choices made for financial gain – such as conducting illicit human experiments.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but ponder: Although both scenarios might coexist, the enigmatic series “Severance” has yet to illuminate where sincere convictions give way to ritualistic worship. Is Lumon merely driven by profit, manipulating Kier’s rhetoric as a smokescreen for their methods? Or is Lumon’s wealth being channeled towards an ultimate objective that aligns with Kier’s philosophies? Who among the upper echelons genuinely embraces his teachings, and who’s merely climbing the corporate ladder, playing the part convincingly? The upcoming Season 3 of “Severance” needs to delve deeply into these intriguing questions.
What Does Dr. Mauer’s Desperate Cry Mean?
In the finale of Severance Season 2, when Outie Mark encounters Gemma on the Testing Floor, they both hastily dash towards an elevator as Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson) pursues them. Just before the elevator doors shut, Dr. Mauer frantically tries to persuade Outie Mark and Gemma to come back, yelling ominously: “You’ll destroy everyone!” The ambiguity of the pronoun game leaves unclear whom he means by “them.
In simpler terms, Dr. Mauer informs Outie Mark that if the truth about Gemma’s escape is revealed, all the inner personalities will be shut down permanently. The final episode of Severance Season 2 hinted at the extreme practices of Lumon, such as Mr. Drummond preparing to sacrifice a goat and entomb it with Gemma, hoping it would guide her spirit to Kier. This leads us to wonder if there are hidden levels within Lumon where people are entombed, and whether this act means certain death or something more complex. Is Dr. Mauer concerned about former test subjects who are still in a state of suspended animation somewhere? The upcoming Season 3 of Severance should shed light on whom Dr. Mauer refers to as “them.
The two seasons of Severance are currently available on Apple TV+.
