In the first season of “Severance“, the character Burt G., played by Christopher Walken, was introduced alongside Irving B., portrayed by John Turturro. Their tender relationship hinted at Lumon Industries’ efforts to prevent its severed employees from fostering deep human relationships. Since Lumon aims to create compliant workers who function like mechanical parts, it seems they don’t want their tools forming friendships. When Lumon compelled Innie Burt (Burt’s severed self) into retirement to quell Macrodata Refinement’s growing unrest, Irving, the loyal employee, chose to join the MDR revolution, aiming to reveal Lumon’s dark secrets. However, Burt’s story didn’t end there, as the outie (non-severed) Burt was later seen stalking Outie Irving in season 2, arousing suspicions that were ultimately confirmed in Episode 6.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Severance Season 2, Episode 6
In the fourth episode of Severance Season 2, character Irv gives up his life during the ORTBO to expose Helena Eagan (Britt Lower), who had been pretending to be Helly R., infiltrating the MDR team. By the fifth episode, Outie Irving struggles with the termination of his Innie’s job at Lumon, complicating his ongoing investigation into the company. While using a pay phone to communicate with an unknown contact, Irving spots Outie Burt observing him from a parked vehicle in the night. Initially defensive, Burt reveals he’s been tracking Irving since a past event when Irving unexpectedly visited his home. Burt explains that Lumon didn’t officially ‘retire’ him but rather let him go due to an unapproved romantic relationship between their inner selves. To confront this shared history and clear the air, Burt extends an invitation for dinner with his husband, Fields (John Noble). Irving agrees, leading to the awkward dinner party depicted in Episode 6.
Severance Exposes Decades of Deception in Burt’s Dinner Party
The Episode 6 meal starts pleasantly, as Fields extends a sincere welcome to Irving, establishing a welcoming ambiance. The dining area is elegantly adorned, the food looks delightful, and the three gentlemen share laughter over jokes. Throughout dinner, Burt shares that his religious convictions influenced his choice for severance. As Burt and Fields explain, their church’s perspective on severance implies that both innies and outies have distinct souls, making the process a special chance for spiritual salvation. Following a life of sin in his youth, severance provided Burt an avenue for his innie’s soul to attain heaven alongside Fields, even if his outie was destined for Hell due to past wrongdoings.
As the night unfolds and numerous bottles of wine are consumed, Fields grows more loquacious and lively. In a conversation about pet names, he casually brings up that the couple adopted their nickname “Atilla” (a playful reference to “hun”) twenty years back, vividly remembering they were drinking with Burt’s “Lumon partner” at the time. When Irving corrects him by stating that Lumon didn’t open its first floor until twelve years later, the atmosphere in the room takes a sharp turn. Burt swiftly hushes his husband, his shoulders betraying tension as he steers the conversation elsewhere, asserting Fields was mistaken. Later, when escorting Irving to the door privately, Burt offers numerous apologies for Fields’ behavior, attributing it to his intoxication and confusion about the dates. However, his fervent attempts to clarify the timeline inconsistency only serve to magnify it further.
This incident carries more weight because, at this dinner gathering, Mr. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) unexpectedly enters Irving’s apartment. The timing of the dinner invitation aligning precisely with Drummond’s break-in raises suspicion that Burt could be continuing his collaboration with Lumon, meticulously arranging the dinner to keep Irving away from home during a time when the company was secretly evaluating how much information their ex-employee possessed about their internal workings.
As they prepare to leave amidst the chill of the evening, Irving proposes to Burt that they arrange another get-together, perhaps a secret rendezvous without Fields involved. This idea excites Burt, hinting at a potential romantic entanglement. However, Irving’s eagerness seems rooted in his ongoing probe into Lumon, suggesting he’s intrigued by the unexpected disclosure about Burt’s lengthy association with the company that Fields accidentally revealed. The idea lingers between them, heavy with unsaid implications and potential consequences.
Regardless of Burt’s exact relationship with Lumon, it is evident that his association with the company goes back almost a decade before the public unveiling of the severance program. This fact raises troubling questions about his possible influence on the creation of the technology that ultimately confined numerous employees within Lumon’s psychological prison.
