As a die-hard fan who has followed the illustrious career of Ruth Bradley since her days on “Humans” and “Guilt,” I can confidently say that Slow Horses is a must-watch. The show’s unique blend of sharp wit, gripping suspense, and intricate characters, reminiscent of the brilliance found in “The Thick of It” and James Bond, makes it a standout in today’s television landscape.

“Ruth Bradley, new to the cast, describes ‘Slow Horses’ as a unique blend of ‘The Thick of It’ and James Bond elements, neither strictly comedy nor drama. She finds it captivating and believes it ranks among the top TV shows currently airing,” says Ruth Bradley, who has worked on C4’s ‘Humans’ and the BBC’s ‘Guilt’ in the past.
Emma Flyte’s character serves as the leader of MI5’s security team, known as The Dogs – a group of somber, burly men who drive black Range Rovers. Reporting directly to MI5 deputy director-general Diana Taverner (portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas), one of Flyte’s initial tasks involves investigating a grisly murder at the residence of former spy chief David Cartwright. At this crime scene, Flyte, who is played by 37-year-old Irish actor Bradley, encounters Jackson Lamb, a character who proves to be a formidable test for her authority, even more so than the assassins terrorizing London and its surrounding counties.
Gary was my acting idol. This is a huge moment for me
Bradley commented on the script, “That’s the first scene I took a look at.” He continued, “I recall thinking, ‘Wow, what kind of show is this? This has to be some of the best dialogue I’ve read in years.’ It’s so well-written, and that’s a testament to the brilliance of [Slow Horses showrunner] Will Smith.” He added, “All of it was right there on the page.”
In typical fashion, Lamb, who might find himself in hot water for his inappropriately personal remarks at most contemporary workplaces, employs condescending sexism to belittle Flyte. “Her position,” Bradley notes, “is one that has traditionally been male-dominated. I was curious about the amount of sexism she likely faced on her journey to this point and how she’s handling it. It serves as her motivation.” It is safe to infer that there is a notable level of friction in Flyte and Lamb’s interactions.
For Bradley, working with a man who has Lamb’s peculiar habits is an unprecedented experience, apparently. She finds it amusing yet brilliantly clever, as it catches people off guard. People tend to underestimate him due to his strong odor and constant passing of gas, making them overlook his seriousness. In the initial episode, Flyte doesn’t seem to take him seriously at all; however, she later realizes her mistake in judgment.
Bradley met Gary Oldman for the first time at a hotel in Oxford before filming started. As he was going up the stairs and Gary was heading down, they simply said hello. But it was one of those surreal instances where you’re thinking, “I’m shaking hands with Gary Oldman!” He had been my acting hero since I was young, and suddenly, there I was, sharing a scene with him. It remains a significant milestone in my career that still feels momentous.
Was it nerve-racking, to work with her idol?
Before knowing Gary and Kristin, I would have found them intimidating, but upon meeting them, they turned out to be far from scary. In fact, Gary doesn’t have an unpleasant odor; it’s just his makeup, costume, and acting skills that give off that impression. As for Kristin, she exudes nothing but perfection and beauty in her scent.
