Sgt Rock release date speculation as Daniel Craig drops out

It seemed exciting to imagine Daniel Craig collaborating again with Luca Guadagnino on a movie within the fresh DC Universe, an intriguing twist in the realm of comic book films. However, it appears that this team-up may not materialize anymore.

As a movie aficionado, I was looking forward to seeing the ex-James Bond actor gracing the big screen in the forthcoming Sgt Rock, but alas, it appears that he’s no longer involved in the project. The film, under the direction of Guadagnino and boasting a script written by Justin Kuritzkes, who is known for penning Queer and Challengers, still promises an intriguing cinematic experience.

To date, no explanation has been provided for why Craig left, but it’s been whispered that a scheduling conflict may have hindered him from accepting the position, and some speculate that Craig himself grew disinterested in the project.

It seems that prolific director Guadagnino is moving forward with the project, though the lead actor has yet to be announced. When can we expect the movie to release? If Craig won’t be returning, who might take his place? And just who is Sgt Rock?

Read on for everything we know so far.

Sgt Rock release date speculation

Currently, there’s no set date for the cinema release of Sgt Rock as production on the project hasn’t started yet.

Among the multiple films in progress for James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, due to launch with the summer release of Superman, are also projects like Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a screenplay by Mike Flanagan titled Clayface, Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold, and James Mangold’s Swamp Thing.

Guadagnino is widely recognized as one of the most active directors today, having released two films last year (Challengers and Queer), another this fall (After the Hunt), and also being involved in several other projects such as a remake of American Psycho and a film called Separate Rooms starring Josh O’Connor and Léa Seydoux.

Excitingly, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that DC could potentially kick-start their production in the UK this summer! That means we might not have an unbearably long wait on our hands.

As suggested by World of Reel, there have been whispers about a potential release in the latter half of May 2026, specifically over Memorial Day weekend. However, it’s essential to note that these rumors lack concrete evidence at this point, so they should be approached with a degree of skepticism or caution.

We’ll update this page when we hear anything more concrete.

Sgt Rock cast: Who could replace Daniel Craig?

It hasn’t been determined who will take over the role left open by Craig’s departure yet, but it seems the project is exploring other options. At present, there are rumors circulating about The Bear star Jeremy Allen White being considered for the part, so we’ll see if that pans out.

It seems undecided who else might take on the role, but given the difficulties experienced during the transition from Daniel Craig as James Bond, we can only cross our fingers and hope that DC (Dwayne Johnson, who is reportedly in talks for the role) comes up with a swift resolution compared to Eon Productions.

At this point, we’re still unsure about who will make up the supporting cast. We’ll share more details once we have them!

Who is Sgt Rock?

If you’re curious about the identity of Sgt Rock, it’s worth knowing that he originated in 1959, predating the superhero surge of the early ’60s. Mainly, his tales revolve around his execution of perilous missions during World War II.

Originating from the minds of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, this character’s complete moniker is Sergeant Franklin J. Rock, who held a distinguished service record in World War II, serving as a non-commissioned officer in the infantry, and attaining prominence within his company, Easy Company.

Regarding his abilities, he’s famously skilled – capable of taking down multiple enemy fighter jets using just a submachine gun, and possessing extraordinary durability and physical might that seems almost superhuman.

Additionally, he possesses an innate ability to sense oncoming attacks from enemies, a skill he calls his Battle Sensor.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Sgt. Rock. It’s been quite some time since his last solo comic book series was published back in 2009, and since then, he’s largely disappeared from the limelight. However, this film could potentially take a daring new approach, mirroring Gunn’s unique reinterpretations of characters like Peacemaker and Vigilante.

It could very well be that DC Studios’ Sgt Rock shares a link with John Cena’s military persona, potentially shedding light on why this project is being given priority over more established characters. For the time being, we can only speculate.

On numerous occasions, efforts have been made to introduce this character on the big screen, as both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis were previously associated with the part. However, if successful, it will mark his debut in live-action performances.

He has made brief appearances in several animated films and television series, with Maury Sterling, Karl Urban, Fred Tatasciore, and Fred Dryer lending their voices to different roles featuring this character.

Is there a trailer for Sgt Rock?

No, and given that production is yet to start we’ll likely have to wait for some time yet.

Of course, why don’t you take a moment to rewatch the Superman trailer below to help set the tone for this exciting new chapter in the DC movie universe?
