Sgt. Rock Set to Enter James Gunn’s DCU With James Bond’s Daniel Craig

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for iconic characters and exceptional acting talent, I must say that the pairing of Daniel Craig as Sgt. Rock under James Gunn’s guidance is an intriguing prospect. With Craig’s proven ability to embody complex and beloved characters like James Bond and Benoit Blanc, and Guadagnino’s knack for crafting captivating stories (as seen in his work on “Call Me by Your Name” and the upcoming “Queer”), this collaboration has the potential to breathe new life into a classic character.

Actor Daniel Craig, known for his role as James Bond, has signed on to work with director James Gunn in the upcoming DC Universe project. According to Deadline, Craig is set to collaborate once again with Luca Guadagnino for a Sgt. Rock film being produced by DC Studios and Peter Safran. Justin Kuritzkes is reportedly drafting the screenplay for Sgt. Rock. Notably, Guadagnino and Craig had previously worked together on this year’s romantic drama, Queer. The production of the Sgt. Rock feature will precede Guadagnino’s reboot of Lionsgate’s American Psycho. At this point, no contracts have been signed between DC Studios, Daniel Craig, or Luca Guadagnino, so we’ll have to wait and see if this collaboration materializes.

The initial collection of offerings from the revamped DC Universe is getting ready to roll out. In December, we can look forward to the debut of the adult-animated “Creature Commandos” on Max, followed by James Gunn’s direction of both “Superman” and “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, which stars Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon”. David Corenswet will be stepping into the role of Superman in “Superman”.

Originating from the minds of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Sgt. Rock first appeared in issue #83 of “Our Army at War” back in 1959. This World War II hero quickly rose to fame among comic book fans, leading to the series being renamed solely as “Sgt. Rock“. Although Sgt. Rock doesn’t possess any explicitly declared superhuman abilities, he’s displayed an impressive capacity to withstand gunshot wounds, as well as extraordinary physical strength and resilience. Much like Spider-Man’s “spider-sense”, Sgt. Rock is equipped with a “Combat Antenna” that alerts him of potential threats ahead.

Daniel Craig, popularly recognized as the latest actor to embody the globally acclaimed secret agent James Bond, portrayed this iconic role in “No Time to Die” (2021), and will subsequently feature in Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novella “Queer” on November 27th. Craig is also well-known for his portrayal of super-detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” murder mystery series, with the next movie entitled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery“, slated for release in 2025.
