Reflecting upon these intriguing tidbits of celebrity origins, I find myself captivated by the transformative power of stage names and personal evolution. It’s fascinating to see how these individuals, once ordinary people with seemingly mundane monikers, rose to fame under new identities that resonated more profoundly with their artistic visions.

A Virginia high school football coach’s fumble helped inspire Shaboozey‘s stage name.

Initially, the man misspelled the real last name of the outlaw country star, causing the artist, who was born Collins Obinna Chibueze, to take on the nickname Shaboozey. Later, he officially used this nickname in the music industry, according to a report by Billboard on October 3.

Additionally, it wasn’t just the coach who initially misunderstood his last name. Shaboozey, whose surname translates to “God is king” in Igbo, shared his story about attending high school in Woodbridge, Virginia (a suburb of Washington D.C.) with a name that many found challenging to pronounce correctly.

The “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” singer shared with Billboard that it was a common occurrence for them to hear their name mispronounced during attendance. To make things simpler for others, they felt compelled to adjust it.

Shaboozey had also reflected on the origin of his stage name in an interview this past summer.

As a freshman playing football in high school, you often find yourself in a position where you need to demonstrate your abilities. During a 102.7 KIIS-FM interview in June, he explained that this was his experience. His coach, upon seeing his last name, would call him “Shaboozey” and write it on a helmet just like his artist name spells it.

The singer of “Start a Riot” went on to say, “I was often referred to by that name throughout school, during high school and even in Woodbridge. Everyone around town recognized me as such. And I thought it was neat to show off to my football coaches.

Shaboozey mentioned that he hasn’t maintained contact with that specific football coach. He playfully quipped, “Maybe he thinks I named him and comes to the dinner table each evening to check!
