Shadows of the Damned Sequel Is Possible, Says Suda51

As a long-time fan of Suda51’s unique and quirky game design, the prospect of a sequel to “Shadows of the Damned” has me downright giddy! The original game, with its over-the-top action, dark humor, and unforgettable characters, left such an indelible mark on me that I can still recall the thrilling moments like they were yesterday.

Renowned director Goichi “Suda51” Suda hinted at the possibility of a follow-up to “Shadows of the Damned,” but this depends on the success of the upcoming remastered version, titled “Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered.” Scheduled for release in October, “Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered” is an updated take on the popular action game initially released in 2011. Despite the game being put on hold since then, Suda51 has continued to brainstorm concepts for a new project.

In a conversation with Gematsu, Suda51 mentioned that he and the team at Grasshopper Manufacture are quite open to developing a sequel for Shadows of the Damned. However, he clarified that whether they proceed with a new entry in the series will depend on the sales of Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered. When asked about the potential plot for a Shadows of the Damned sequel, Suda51 hinted that it could continue from where Grasshopper’s Travis Strikes Again left off, or it might tell a completely new story set before the original game’s events.

If the remastered version of the game sells successfully and there’s clear demand for it, creator Suda51 mentioned that they might think about creating a new installment in the series. In fact, there was a kind of sequel included in No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again, featuring Eight Hearts/Johnson. A potential idea for a new Shadows of the Damned game could involve Eight Hearts embarking on a mission to assist Garcia, as an extension of the storyline from Travis Strikes Again; or it could be a prequel, delving into how Garcia became a demon hunter.

While it’s thrilling to learn that there might be a new installment of Shadows of the Damned, it’s important to note that the initial game had a relatively small audience. Given sales records, it appears that the original Shadows of the Damned didn’t surpass 1 million units sold during its entire run. Consequently, for Grasshopper Manufacture to even consider a sequel, Hella Remastered would likely need to significantly outperform the original in terms of sales.

Fancy another installment of “Shadows of the Damned”? If that’s a yes, what kind of narrative would you want to explore in this game? Share your thoughts with me on social media at @MooreMan12.
