The actress from “Divergent”, who mentioned feeling unwell during the production of the series, recently shared insights about the various health issues she faced in her twenties and her path towards recovery.
Speaking on the September 24th episode of She MD podcast, I chose not to delve into specific details about my health issues because they’re deeply personal matters I prefer to keep private. In my early twenties, I encountered a rather alarming physical situation that left me struggling. I lost my hearing temporarily, found it challenging to walk without needing extended rest periods, and had to sleep for hours after walking. Additionally, nearly everything I ate caused discomfort in my stomach.
In her own account, a 32-year-old actress (who starred in three Divergent movies from 2013 to 2016) revealed that her physical wellbeing was just one aspect of the hardships she faced during that period.
She explained, “I found myself in a confusing mix of health problems and conflicting advice from various doctors.” Being rooted in holistic practices like herbalism, she aspired to combine conventional medical treatments with alternative healing methods. In essence, she sought to find harmony within herself, embarking on a lengthy quest for comfort.
In fact, the actress from Big Little Lies revealed that it took about ten years for her to completely recover, and in the end, her bodily ailments began affecting her psychological well-being.
During that decade, numerous issues arose as a result of persistent physical discomfort, which made her exclaim, “If everything I eat seems to upset my stomach, I’ve suddenly developed a fear of food.” This was followed by a series of mental turmoil, including body dysmorphia, confusion about self-identity, and a lack of feeling secure within my personal space.
Through her heavy battles within, Shailene observed that her challenging health experience turned out to be vital for her own development in life.
She mentioned that it made her delve deeply within herself, examining her thoughts and feelings. This journey was crucial for her, not just as part of the physical recovery, but also in addressing the mental aspect of healing. She spoke of confronting genuine traumas and PTSD from different periods in her life, without revealing specifics, but acknowledged that these experiences had a significant impact on her overall well-being.
