Shane McMahon Attends “Private Meeting” With AEW President Tony Khan, Discussed “Possibilities Moving Forward”

As a gamer with decades of wrestling fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and curiosity about the recent developments involving Shane McMahon and AEW. With his colorful past in WWE and the intrigue surrounding his potential return to the squared circle, this is like a classic RPG side quest that has suddenly popped up in my game world.

For a couple of years now, Shane McMahon, son of Vince McMahon, has been largely out of the limelight in professional wrestling. His last appearance was at WWE WrestleMania 39, where he had an unexpected match against his long-time rival, The Miz. Unfortunately, during the fight, Shane tore his quad and hasn’t returned since. More recently, legendary WWE Hall of Famer and AEW commentator Jim Ross has hinted at Shane joining AEW. Jim Ross’ co-host then confirmed that Shane had indeed reached out to some wrestlers on the AEW roster, expressing interest in discussing hypothetically about him potentially joining the company.

Over the following weeks, Tony Khan, president of AEW, addressed these rumors in several interviews, dismissing them as unfounded yet expressing an open invitation to Shane, stating he’s always welcomed in All Elite Wrestling.

AEW President Tony Khan Meets With Shane McMahon

That “always welcome” sentiment just became a lot more tangible.

According to both WrestleTalk and Fightful, AEW President Tony Khan met privately with Shane McMahon on Monday, July 29th at an office in a private Arlington airport. The conversation between them reportedly revolved around potential future opportunities. It seems that Tony has been keen to engage with Shane for some time, but their paths had not crossed or even led to a phone call until the rumors about Shane and AEW started circulating this summer.

For the past few weeks, it’s been reported that Tony might be planning to involve Shane in some capacity, but it remains undecided whether Shane will appear on screen or participate in matches.

For most of his grown-up years, Shane has been actively engaged in professional wrestling. He started working for the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) as a referee in the 1990s. Later, he collaborated with Vince McMahon, his father who was once the company chairman, on-screen, taking up roles of authority. Eventually, he even stepped into the wrestling ring himself. He left WWE in 2009 but came back in 2016 as part of a storyline to regain control over the company. This fictional plot eventually became factual, with Shane becoming the commissioner for WWE SmackDown and holding various behind-the-scenes roles.

Fans’ admiration for Shane was unwavering until late 2018, but it started to waver due to a series of wins that many felt were undeserved. These included his victory in the WWE World Cup and defeating Roman Reigns. In January 2022, Shane faced a lot of backlash for his part in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match, as it was rumored he booked himself to appear stronger than several full-time wrestlers. Just a week later, news broke that Shane had been dismissed by WWE, with Vince vowing never to let Shane elicit another positive audience response in WWE again. However, this stance seemed to soften in April 2023 when Shane made an unexpected appearance as an opponent for The Miz at WWE WrestleMania 39.
