Among the beloved characters in “One Piece,” Red-Hair Shanks holds a prominent position, being one of the mightiest pirates as a Yonko. Following Kaido’s downfall in Wano, he learns about Luffy’s power awakening and decides to pursue the legendary treasure, “One Piece.” Despite his infrequent appearances in the narrative, Shanks remains crucial. He once stole a powerful devil fruit from the World Government and hid out in Foosha Village, Luffy’s hometown. Unaware of its powers at the time, Luffy consumed the devil fruit and has since dedicated himself to honing his newfound abilities.
In the world of One Piece, Shanks serves as Luffy’s inspiration and is a cryptic figure who may hail from a prestigious lineage. Despite this, he has spent his entire existence living as a pirate. Initially found by Roger and Rayleigh when he was just a year old, they nurtured him until he reached the age of around fifteen. Even after Roger’s demise, Shanks persisted in his pirate lifestyle and established his own crew, the Red-Hair Pirates. It wasn’t until Chapter 957 that the Marines disclosed Shanks had earned the title of Yonko six years prior, with a current bounty of 4.0489 billion berries. However, it wasn’t until Chapter 1136 that the true explanation behind his title was unveiled.

One Piece Chapter 1136 Confirms Shanks Defeated Loki Six Years Ago
To ascend to the rank of Yonko, a pirate must perform an extraordinary feat. Blackbeard boosted his status significantly by siding against the Whitebeard Pirates during the Marineford War and seizing their leadership position. Luffy managed to claim the title by overthrowing Kaido, another Yonko. In a similar vein, Shanks demonstrated exceptional prowess by defeating Loki, a pirate with a staggering bounty of 2.6 billion berries. Notably, even the warriors from the mightiest nation, Elbaf, were unable to contain their Curse Prince. However, Shanks single-handedly subdued this powerful giant, eventually capturing him in the underworld. The prince was on a rampage until Shanks tracked him down and bound him beneath the sea.
In a twist of events, Loki stands accused of murdering his father, King Harold, in order to obtain a powerful artifact akin to a devil fruit. At this moment, he is being affixed to a cross in the underworld. Yet, despite the Holy Knights approaching him with a recruitment offer, Loki staunchly refuses their proposition. This rejection suggests that Loki is not a mindless destroyer like the Giants believe; rather, his actions are deliberate and calculated. The Holy Knights represent the World Government and uphold law and order in the sacred land of Mary Geoise.
They surpass Marines in strength, even exceeding Admirals. They presented the most formidable challenge to the Revolutionary Army. In Chapter 1083, Dragon hints that the true battle will commence once the Holy Knights are incapacitated. Gunko and Shanks’ doppelganger visiting Elbaf to enlist Loki underscores his power.
This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.
This demonstrates that Shanks’ victory over Loki is an accomplishment deserving of earning him the title of a Yonko. Prior to Kaido and Big Mom’s defeat, he was the youngest and strongest Yonko. Since the start of the Final Saga, the manga has been gradually revealing more about Shanks. While this chapter doesn’t explicitly state it, at least we are one step closer to understanding more about our cherished Red-Haired pirate.
