The initial phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was thrilling due to all the anticipation it built. After Nick Fury appeared unexpectedly at Tony Stark’s house in Iron Man, the series skyrocketed, adding a new hero with each stop and eventually bringing them together in The Avengers. The MCU repeated this success when Avengers: Infinity War was released, facing off the entire universe against Thanos, the Mad Titan. However, following Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios seemed to lose its direction. Phases 4 and 5 saw the franchise spreading in multiple directions, making a collapse seem imminent. Incredibly, Thunderbolts manages to achieve the seemingly impossible, putting the MCU back on the right path after its shocking finale.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*
In Thunderbolts, it’s disclosed that the latest MCU squad functions as the “New Avengers.” For a year, they serve as Earth’s top superheroes until Sam Wilson takes an unexpected step by registering the name “Avengers.” This action appears somewhat surprising, especially since his friend Bucky Barnes is part of the team. However, the MCU has been subtly preparing for this disagreement since She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
She-Hulk Reveals That the Avengers Are Nothing More Than a Gimmick
Following the Avengers’ triumph over Thanos in Endgame, they part ways, leaving a significant void behind. This vacancy is subtly addressed in Spider-Man: Far From Home, as Peter Parker’s schoolmates question the whereabouts of Earth’s superheroes. Later on, Nick Fury clarifies that many Avengers are currently unreachable to assist in battling the Elementals. Although numerous catastrophic incidents occur after this, life continues much the same, with people eventually acknowledging the shift.
When “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” arrives, the Avengers have become something of a laughing stock. Two of Jennifer Walters’ colleagues, Pug and Nikki, embark on a quest to investigate a man in Los Angeles who manufactures superhero costumes. Their expedition leads them to a coffee shop where the barista is illegally peddling counterfeit Avengers merchandise, such as phony Captain America shields and shirts bearing the phrase “Avingers.” This humorous scenario indicates how desperate people in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are to make a profit, but it also hints at the need for the Avengers to regain the world’s admiration.
Sam Wilson Wants to Fix the Avengers’ Image in Doomsday
In the closing scenes of “Captain America: Brave New World“, Sam expresses his intention to reassemble the Avengers. After much contemplation, he gains the conviction to wield the shield and assumes the mantle of the Sentinel of Liberty, ready to lead this iconic team. Regrettably, Sam’s deliberate nature allows Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to beat him to it by forming her own Avengers squad as a precautionary measure. However, this unexpected development does not discourage Sam from moving forward with his plans for the reformation of the Avengers.
In simpler terms, by trademarking the name “Avengers”, Sam can maintain control over their image. Although Bucky and the gang are making positive strides and aiming to assist, it’s not a positive impression when ex-criminals lead the operation. The public often criticizes the New Avengers, as they share memes poking fun at them after Sam announces his plan to create a new team. Red Guardian attempted to stay ahead by wearing a “New Avengerz” costume, but it’s hard to overlook the resemblance to those tacky T-shirts seen in She-Hulk. It’s high time for the Avengers to be taken seriously once more, which calls for resolving an ongoing issue that has been building up for quite some time.
