Shellfish Nightmare: Star’s Gout Hell

Anthony Anderson is getting candid on an unusual health scare.

The main actor from “Black-ish” revealed that he developed gout, a type of arthritis, after consuming excessive amounts of shellfish during the filming of “K-Ville” in New Orleans back in 2007.

On the April 28th episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, as shared by People, I declared, “For quite some time now, all I’ve been consuming is seafood and shellfish.” This diet, rich in purines, led to an unusual predicament. One day, during a scene, I attempted to kick open a door only to realize, with a painful jolt, that I might have broken my toe. A memory I shall never forget!

Shellfish contain a chemical called purine, which transforms into uric acid within the body as explained by the Mayo Clinic. Excessive amounts of uric acid may result in crystal formation within the bloodstream, potentially leading to gout.

For Anderson, 54, his condition worsened after he hit his toe on set.

He described it this way: “After completing the scene, we shifted to a different location. It was late at night, and we were filming inside a hotel. I was lying down on the bed when they called ‘Action,’ and I sprang up to pursue the suspect. As I put weight on my right foot, I felt myself falling. I exclaimed, ‘I think I broke my toe.’ The following day, I visited the doctor, still limping.

In 2002, Anderson was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and later, medical experts informed him that the pain in his toe wasn’t due to a break, but was instead a diagnosis of gout.

In that moment, Anderson exclaimed, “You’re acting foolish!” He noticed that it appeared to be scorching hot and if one hovered their hand over it, they could sense the heat radiating from it.

At that time, Anderson bluntly stated, “You’re really heating things up!” He observed that it seemed extremely hot to touch, and if someone placed their hand near it, they would certainly feel the warmth emanating from it.

Indeed, that can be a common symptom of gout, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The description provided by the medical website indicates that gout is marked by unexpected, intense bouts of pain, inflammation, redness, and tenderness in one or more joints, particularly the big toe. In such cases, an episode of gout might suddenly arise, disturbing your sleep during the night as if your big toe were on fire. The affected joint becomes hot, swollen, and so sensitive that even the lightest pressure, like a bedsheet resting upon it, can feel unbearable.

Previously on Bachelor Nation, this cast member revealed that, due to excruciating back pain worsened during a road trip in an RV with a companion, he had to seek medical attention and crawl his way into the hospital on all fours.

At this moment, from my knees to the tips of my toes, it’s as if there’s still a strange tingling sensation,” he explained during an episode of his Trading Secrets podcast in March 2025. “To put it into perspective, let me clarify, I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but about two or three weeks ago, I was likely squatting around 295 pounds. Now, I can’t even do a single squat on one leg without falling. It feels like I’ve had a stroke or something similar.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Hailey Bieber experienced a terrifying incident in March 2022 during breakfast with her husband Justin Bieber when she started showing symptoms similar to a stroke. As she recounted the experience on YouTube a month later, she shared that when Justin asked if she was alright, she couldn’t respond because she wasn’t certain. Upon trying to speak, she found herself unable to form sentences, and her right side of the face began drooping.

Hailey mentioned that the facial drooping ceased, but her speech returned only temporarily. She immediately sought medical attention to ensure her well-being. The doctors conducted scans and diagnosed her with a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA).

Later on, Hailey visited the University of California, Los Angeles, where she discovered that she had a hole in her heart called patent foramen ovale (PFO). The model explained that the blood clot migrated into her heart, escaped through the PFO, and reached her brain, resulting in the TIA.

Hailey underwent a successful procedure to close the hole in her heart and reported feeling well since then.

In the same year Hailey went through her health crisis, Justin also encountered one of his own. Specifically, in June 2022, the “Baby” singer revealed he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition affecting the facial nerves, leading to temporary paralysis in parts of his face and forcing him to postpone the rest of his Justice World Tour. To explain, Justin shared an Instagram video stating that the virus attacking the nerve in his ear caused paralysis on one side of his face, making it impossible for him to blink one eye, smile on that side, or move the nostril on that side. The condition even made eating difficult for him at first, but eventually, the paralysis subsided. Hailey later shared on a June 2022 episode of Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and feeling much better despite it being a frightening and seemingly random situation. She expressed gratitude that he was okay in the end.

Jamie Foxx initially chose to keep secret the details of his hospitalization in April 2023. However, later on, during his Netflix special in 2024 titled “What Had Happened Was…”, he shared his ordeal. In Atlanta, he experienced a severe headache and asked for an aspirin. Before he could take it, he fainted and lost consciousness for about 20 days.

A doctor initially gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister Deidra Dixon took him to another hospital where they discovered that a brain hemorrhage had led to a stroke. After undergoing surgery on the 20th day, Foxx woke up May 4 in a wheelchair, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy.

“I just want to express my gratitude for every prayer,” he said, “because I truly needed them.

As a dedicated follower of mine own journey, I, much like Emilia Clarke, found myself embroiled in intense battle scenes for the epic series, “Game of Thrones.” However, it was a different kind of fight that took center stage in my life in 2019. In an essay titled “A Battle for My Life,” published in The New Yorker, I recounted my personal ordeal.

One fateful day at the gym, I was struck by a severe headache that led me to the toilet, where I became violently ill. The pain, described as shooting, stabbing, and constricting, was escalating. Somewhere within me, I knew the truth: my brain had been damaged.

Rushed to the hospital for a scan, the diagnosis was swift and dire: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding in the space surrounding my brain. I had suffered an aneurysm, an arterial rupture.

The immediate surgery to seal the aneurysm was excruciatingly painful. As I recovered, I grappled with aphasia, uttering nonsensical words. A week later, the aphasia subsided, and I was discharged from the hospital after a month-long stay.

However, a 2013 brain scan revealed that the growth had doubled in size, necessitating another surgery. “When they woke me,” I wrote, “I was screaming in pain. The procedure had failed. I had a massive bleed, and the doctors made it clear that my chances of survival were precarious if they didn’t operate again. This time they needed to access my brain the old-fashioned way—through my skull.”

Fortunately, I am now “at a hundred percent,” sharing my story as a testament to resilience and the indomitable spirit of human beings.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, expresses her gratitude towards her family. Following a severe stroke in January 2024, they were quick to provide support and care for her. She reached out to them immediately, sharing the news via text along with a picture. Upon hearing this, everyone rushed to her aid.

Due to additional health complications, Cori’s stay at the hospital was prolonged beyond what she had initially anticipated. As her lupus wasn’t responding well and her kidneys were failing, she found herself needing more time for recovery.

Fortunately, today, Cori is on the road to recovery. She stated, “I’m doing great. I just needed to work back on my motor skills, but otherwise, I was fine.

During her twenties, the health of Shailene Woodley wasn’t easy to manage. She experienced difficulties such as losing her hearing, struggling to walk for extended periods without needing long rests, and stomach issues with almost everything she ate. Her condition was complex, involving multiple diagnoses from different doctors.

To find answers, Shailene – who has a background in holistic medicine and herbalism – sought help from both conventional medical professionals and independent healers. This journey to understand her health challenges took approximately 10 years.

During this time, she also faced mental struggles due to her physical discomfort. Shailene noted that she developed fear of food, which then led to body dysmorphia, confusion about identity, and feelings of insecurity within herself.

After focusing on improving both her physical and mental health, Shailene is now feeling much better. She shared that her health issues eventually resolved themselves, and she is happy to report that she’s currently healthy.
