Sherlock: Not Making Season 5 “Madness” Creator Says (but Teases a Twist)

As a dedicated gamer and a die-hard fan of Sherlock Holmes, I’ve been following this series since its inception, and let me tell you, the wait for Season 5 feels like a never-ending game of ‘waiting for Godot.’ The tantalizing hints dropped by Moffat about the possibility of another season have sent my heart racing faster than a high-speed chase in Grand Theft Auto.

Despite no advancement being made yet regarding the fifth season of BBC’s Sherlock, series co-creator Steven Moffat has given fans a glimmer of optimism. In an interview with SFX magazine, Moffat responded to producer Sue Vertue’s previous statements and expressed his hope that the show will return someday. He also hinted at some potential ideas for the upcoming season.

Moffat expressed his enthusiasm for repeating the experience, stating, “Why aren’t we doing it more often? After all, it’s a format that has stood the test of time, over a century old and still thriving. Sue’s comment was merely in response to being asked, and it doesn’t imply any new development. We’re just deflecting that question as usual. We’d be eager to do it again, and I hope we will someday.” In simpler terms, Moffat is saying he wishes they could do it again, but there’s no recent news about it.

Moffat mentioned that he was referring to Deadline’s recent interview with Vertue, where she stated: “We adore that series and it has a potential future ahead. However, only under certain circumstances. Possibly. If everyone involved is willing. I have the set stored away somewhere, which might be decaying by now, truthfully speaking. It’s simply a matter of coordinating schedules, getting the actors to express interest.

Regarding Moffat, he believed that the audience’s excitement would eventually result in a fifth season. He expressed this by saying: “It’s satisfying to have a show people care about deeply, given that many shows you create throughout your career don’t receive much attention. It feels almost arrogant not to continue it, but there are no definitive plans, absolutely none.

What would Sherlock Season 5 be About?

Regarding the specific details of a potential Sherlock remake, Moffat hinted: “We indeed have an idea. The concept is essentially to revisit it but with some tweaks… It would be intriguing to portray them slightly older, considering our adaptation always emphasized their youth. In addition to this, the fact that we modernized them adds another layer. Presenting them at a Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke age, more like Rathbone and Bruce, seems appealing. I believe it would be charming to see the more mature version of these characters.

“There’s an audience waiting for it. It seems madness not to do it,” he concluded.”

Moffat teamed up with Mark Gatiss to develop “Sherlock” for the BBC, which initially aired in 2010. The fourth season was broadcast in 2017. Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Sherlock Holmes, while Dr. John Watson was played by Martin Freeman. Although the series took place in contemporary London, it preserved many of the key elements from the Sherlock Holmes legend.

The series has numerous tales and books available for adaptation, potentially running for years. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that both Cumberbatch and Freeman have risen to A-list status, not to mention the other talented actors in the show. Coordinating such a large cast for another production might prove difficult.

At present, you can stream ‘Sherlock’ within the U.S. on either Hulu or Britbox. You can also purchase it on DVD and Blu-ray formats.
