Sherwood creator hints at bringing back characters as he talks future plans

As a die-hard fan of gritty British dramas, I have been utterly captivated by Sherwood, especially with its gripping second season that has just concluded. With my extensive background in community organizing and politics, I found myself deeply immersed in the tense storylines depicting current day tensions within Nottinghamshire.

Much like each thrilling episode’s intense storm, Season 2 of Sherwood has come to an end, and oh, what a rollercoaster ride it turned out to be!

As a passionate cinephile, I’m excited to delve into the latest season that boasts a fresh cast alongside some beloved characters from season 1, such as David Morrissey and Lesley Manville. This time around, the storyline unfolds in modern-day Nottinghamshire, exploring the undercurrents of tension that pervade the region.

Instead of focusing on the aftermath of ’80s miner’s strikes, the most recent season centers around a gripping narrative that explores tensions within the community, the emergence of local gangs, and the role of the government.

Was the third season of Sherwood as eagerly anticipated as the previous two due to their positive reception? That’s the question on everyone’s lips. Interestingly, we put this very query to the show’s creator, James Graham, during a pre-release roundtable discussion about the series.

In other words, I’m not entirely clear on what that scenario would look like if it were to happen.

He went on to explain: “You’re correct, and if we were to proceed, what truly excites me is the liberty I enjoy as an author to part ways with characters – which would certainly be sorrowful – or resurrect characters that I’ve bid farewell to in this series, but I’ve conceived a fresh concept for them.

It seems as though there are no set guidelines governing this model; instead, it appears to be something we’ve unintentionally or intentionally fashioned ourselves.

Stories from the Red Wall will continue to flow endlessly, and there’s a lingering curiosity about who inhabits these familiar yet mysterious places – ‘Who are these people, and what are their desires?’. Let’s see where this journey takes us further.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my hopes for the upcoming seasons of our beloved series. I believe it’s crucial to convey that while pain, discord, and personal struggles are integral parts of life, they aren’t the whole story. We mustn’t forget the abundance of hope and inspiring individuals who work tirelessly on a grassroots level, making a difference in their communities.

I’d prefer to have the sense that we’re progressing towards a fresh start and a promising future for these communities, no matter what form it takes. However, I suppose there might still need to be some remnants left behind.

Currently, there’s no confirmation about a third season for Sherwood, but its second season showcased an impressive ensemble cast made up of well-known acting talents. Among those who returned were Morrissey, Manville, and Lorraine Ashbourne. Additionally, season 2 welcomed stars like Monica Dolan, David Harewood, Sharlene Whyte, along with several others.

As we anticipate if there will be a third season, Morrissey hinted that it could be intriguing for the storyline to delve into life under a Labour administration. He suggested that it would be fascinating to depict how things are being attempted to evolve compared to how they are actually changing.

He added: “I think Starmer has a tightrope that he needs to walk in the next two or three years so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out in people’s lives. I really like what happens in season 2 between myself and Lesley Manville, we sort of become a team in some way and that’s quite interesting and I love working with her.

“But it’ll be up to James, a bit like Sally Wainwright, Jack Thorne or whoever, he’s just so busy.”

Sherwood seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
