Sherwood renewed for season 3 – James Graham teases “new set of stories”

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for British crime dramas, I must say that the news of Sherwood’s return for a third season has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up in Nottinghamshire, the setting and themes resonate deeply with me. The second season was a gripping portrayal of community division and local politics, reminding me of tales my grandparents used to tell about ‘Shottingham’.

It’s been officially announced that the highly acclaimed crime series airing on BBC One, titled “Sherwood,” will be back for its third installment.

Influenced by the infamous ‘Shottingham’ street gang conflicts, the second season garnered widespread praise from critics for its gripping portrayal of societal fragmentation and local politics within the community.

In the most recent broadcast, episode 1 attracted over 6.5 million viewers, and since early August, there have been over 7.2 million streams of season 1 on BBC iPlayer.

In reference to the renewal, James Graham, both writer and creator, expressed: “It remains an immense honor to craft tales rooted in and influenced by the history of my beloved hometown, Nottinghamshire.

It’s a cherished aspiration for almost every British writer to have a series return on the BBC, and I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering enthusiasm that Lindsay [Salt], Charlotte [Moore], and Jo [McClellan] have for Sherwood. I also extend my gratitude to everyone at House Productions, who are nothing short of the most encouraging producers one could hope for.

Speaking as a passionate film lover, I must express my deepest gratitude to our viewers. I’m committed to crafting an exceptional series 3 that will weave fresh narratives while further developing and concluding storylines I’ve longed to bring to life.

In the meantime, Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, commented: “Sherwood has swiftly become one of the most remarkable TV dramas ever produced, captivating audiences with its superb blend of characters, narratives, and themes that have struck a chord with millions of viewers in the UK.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to join forces with James Graham and his talented team, as we embark on the journey to unfold Sherwood’s next captivating tale for the BBC.

As we look forward to more tales unfolding, there’s no limit to the topics that might be explored in season 3.

Speaking as a cinema enthusiast, I believe Keir Starmer is navigating a delicate balance in the upcoming years, which promises an intriguing unfolding. The dynamic between me and Lesley Manville in season 2 was captivating, we formed an unlikely alliance that added depth to the narrative, and it’s a pleasure working with her. However, the future is in the hands of James, much like Sally Wainwright, Jack Thorne, or any other prolific creator – they’re all incredibly busy.

Sherwood seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
