As Sheryl Crow knows all too well, every day really is a winding road.
In a recent interview with Variety, the nine-time Grammy winner shared that there have been turning points in her life where she needed to change course. For her, one such detour occurred when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and ended her relationship with cyclist Lance Armstrong, who she thought would be by her side as they both reached the finish line.
Following her diagnosis, the 63-year-old made up her mind to permanently move from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and settle in Nashville instead, choosing a new life there.
She explained how her experiences – being in a relationship where she anticipated marriage and becoming a stepmother to the children who would’ve been her stepsiblings, followed by a diagnosis – prompted her to reevaluate her connection with Armstrong and his ex-wife Kristin Richard’s three kids. “I simply reflected on it and realized, ‘I want to establish a home; I yearn for a family.’
She had experienced relationships before, you know. Yet, she was searching for a soul to pour her entire love into. Regrettably, there were numerous individuals who had shattered that love in the past.
In 2014, when I shared my life with successful men, it appeared as though we were on par. However, I discovered that in such relationships, one of us would inevitably fade into the background – it was almost always me. It seems that, unfortunately, this is often the woman who takes a step back to let the other person shine brighter. I can’t say for certain if it’s always the woman, but I do believe that sometimes, in order for one person’s light to outshine, others may have to dim their own.
So, these days, what truly makes her happy is being with her boys: Sons Wyatt, 18, and Levi, 15.
She shared with Variety that her touring plans might need to change as she prioritizes spending time with her family. With her 18-year-old about to leave for college next year, she cherishes the moments she has left with him.
This doesn’t imply that the singer has abandoned her search for a robust partner to be her companion. Although we might never discover her preferred mistake, it’s worth considering the many partners who contributed to her enjoying life in the sunshine.
During the late ’90s, Sheryl Crow was in a short-term romance with the esteemed musician Eric Clapton, who is seventeen years older than her.
Though there were whispers that the relationship served as the basis for her famous song “My Favorite Mistake”, it didn’t endure for very long, with the lyrics portraying an unfaithful former partner.
Regardless of the rumors, Crow never disclosed who the song specifically referred to, and even introduced Clapton as “a close friend of mine” during their 1999 Central Park performance. The fact that he appears on her 2019 album “Threads” suggests that their friendship remains intact.
1999 saw Crow start dating Owen Wilson following their encounter on the set of the relatively unknown movie “The Minus Man,” where she first appeared as one of Wilson’s character’s victims, a serial killer’s prey. They remained together for two years and were even spotted at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2000.
In her album notes for the 2002 release C’mon, C’mon, she openly acknowledges that the song “Safe and Sound” was a tribute to him, encapsulating their shared journey in its lyrics.
In the first quarter of 2003, Crow was romantically involved with actor Josh Charles, who is known for his role in ‘The Good Wife’. They even attended the Grammy Awards together in February. However, by April, their relationship had ended. A source reported to ‘Us Weekly’ that “They are no longer together. She is searching for The One, and he wasn’t it.
In the limelight, Crow started dating Lance Armstrong, a cyclist who later faced scandal, shortly after their encounter at a charitable function in October 2003. This was around the time he finalized his divorce from Kristin Richards, the mother of his three children.
By September 2005, they had become partners and lived together on a ranch in Austin. However, things didn’t work out as planned, and by February 2006, their relationship had come to an end.
After careful deliberation, we’ve arrived at a challenging resolution – to part ways. Our affection and admiration for one another run deep, and we kindly request privacy as we navigate through this tough period in our lives.
2006 marked the year when the host of American Idol was briefly linked with Teri Hatcher, but it’s been speculated (with minimal evidence) that Ryan Seacrest had a romantic involvement with Crow. Whether this rumor originated from unsubstantiated online gossip or remains an undisclosed secret, the truth remains elusive.
Back in 2006, I found myself dining with the esteemed Hank Azaria. This seemingly casual event sparked a flurry of whispers that we might have been an item, although my dear friend Patricia Arquette was also present. To this day, neither Hank nor I have addressed these speculations, and our paths haven’t crossed in public since then.
2008 saw reports emerge that Crow had started dating Steve Bing, a film producer who was previously linked to Elizabeth Hurley, following rumors they were introduced by mutual friend Jennifer Aniston towards the end of 2007.
Following Doyle Bramhall II, a frequent collaborator and bandmate of Eric Clapton, producing her 2010 album titled “100 Miles from Memphis”, Crow deepened their professional bond by taking it to a romantic level. They made their first public appearance as a couple at The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s 2011 Spring Ball.
As I shared with Prevention Magazine last May, I opened up about my unique bond with an unnamed producer. I described him as “exceptionally good” with my two boys. “I’ve experienced the pain of relationships ending and the children getting caught in the crossfire,” I explained. “So, I’m ensuring that our relationship remains on a friendly footing when we’re together with the kids.” I was fortunate, having known him for fifteen years, to build a strong foundation with this individual.
By 2014, it seemed clear that they had ended their relationship, as she was independently promoting her latest album from 2013, “Feels Like Home,” and living as a single woman.
