As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for gripping crime dramas and a soft spot for long-running series, I’m absolutely thrilled about the fresh lease of life that Shetland has been given, especially with the addition of a new lead detective. Having followed DS ‘Tosh’ McIntosh’s journey for almost 12 years now, it’s refreshing to see new characters and relationships unfold.
Alison O’Donnell, known for her role on the Shetland crime drama, mentioned that introducing a new main investigator has kept her experience exciting and refreshing, as she has been playing DS ‘Tosh’ McIntosh for nearly 12 years in Scotland-set productions.
Tomorrow evening, I’m eagerly anticipating the premiere of the newest season of that captivating detective series on BBC One and iPlayer. As a fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease, as Tosh grapples with the unexpected vanishing of a dear friend close to his heart.
At the urging of her supervisor, DI Ruth Calder (played by Ashley Jensen), she embarks on an investigation. However, the disclosures that follow strain their professional bond as Tosh is compelled to expose secrets she’d rather keep hidden.
She mentioned that the current situation seemed reminiscent of both seasons 9 and 2. This is due to the significant shift from season 8, and she believes there’s still a lot unexplored about the new relationships and characters, giving off an unfinished or fresh vibe.
Last year, Jensen became a part of the series’ cast after Douglas Henshall, previously playing DI Jimmy Perez, left due to his desire for fresh opportunities following his character’s dramatic exit from the show in its seventh season, as portrayed in Murder Is Easy.
O’Donnell went on to say, “We had been eagerly waiting for a chance to return and progress further. Therefore, everyone was delighted when given the opportunity to try our luck again with this updated edition of the program.
Clearly, parts of it resemble Season 9, as I’m once again on the police station set with Billy [McBride] and Sandy [Wilson]. It feels nostalgic yet refreshing because it has a dual personality for me now.
She mentioned: “One storyline spans approximately twelve years, while another is limited to just two years.
I have a nice blend of things I’m confident in and areas I’m still growing in, which seems just right.
It seems as though there’s no shortage of tales yet to emerge from the Shetland Isles. Thankfully, the series received a dual renewal this year, ensuring its continuation on television screens up until at least season 10 in 2025.
