As a seasoned television critic with a penchant for mystery series and a soft spot for the rugged landscapes of Scotland, I must say that Shetland season 9 is shaping up to be a thrilling ride. The recent revelation that Annie Bett and Euan Rossi are spies has added an intriguing twist to the plot, and I find myself eagerly anticipating each new episode.
In the ninth season of Shetland, Detective Inspector Calder and Detective Inspector McIntosh are on a fast-paced quest to discover the identity of the person responsible for the murder of local resident Annie Bett and the enigmatic Frenchman Anton Bergen, as well as the reasons behind these fatal acts.
In the airing tonight (on Wednesday, 13th November), an incredible advancement unfolded: It turns out that Annie and Euan Rossi, her old math teacher who just showed up in Scotland, are undercover agents.
At the moment, I was engrossed in Richard Osman’s books, which made me confidently declare, ‘I’m quite familiar with this.’ It seems an exciting area of exploration since these characters are masters of underhanded dealings. This offers a wealth of material to delve into.
Additionally, O’Donnell mentioned that since “the universe and structure of the series has grown so expansive”, the scriptwriters have the freedom to guide the narrative towards virtually any destination.
Just as we saw in Season 8, the narrative could be narrowed to focus solely on the Bain family residing in a single household. This setting would provide fertile ground for hidden truths, mysteries, deception, and concealment – all elements that contribute to the intrigue and suspense that drive the show’s success.
Then, you could explore another direction – investigating human trafficking and far-right extremism in Norway, on a broader international scale. Remarkably, the series maintains its success in both these realms.
As a devoted fan, I must say, transitioning between episodes in this series is quite exhilarating for me. This current season seems to take a bolder turn compared to the subtler approach we saw in season 8.
O’Donnell went on to say that “nothing’s quite what it seems” in the remaining episodes.
She mentioned that this leads us into a scenario where events from different time periods intertwine, referring to the past. She’s looking forward to viewers finding the intrigue and excitement in these historical events.
Since it’s a play, we can expect something a bit more intensified or exaggerated this time around, I hope everyone will agree.
The ninth season of Shetland resumes on BBC One this Wednesday, 20th November, at 9 PM.
