As a longtime aficionado of British crime dramas, I must say that Shetland has consistently delivered intrigue, suspense, and a deep dive into the complexities of human relationships. The latest episode, much like a well-crafted whodunit novel, has added another layer to the already tumultuous life of Detective Tosh McKenzie.
Last week’s episode of Shetland saw a persistent collision between Tosh’s personal and professional lives, as she delved deeper into the murder investigations of her friend Annie Bett and Anton Bergen, a Frenchman, with both cases progressing swiftly.
At a local pub after Ian’s arrest, another friend of Annie’s, Tara Kirk, made a sharp comment during our gathering.
Additionally, Donnie, Tosh’s partner, showed shock that one of his friends was thought to be a potential suspect – despite the fact that the police had solid reasons for initially considering him as a possibility in connection with his wife’s demise.
And that continued in tonight’s episode (27th November).
Besides scolding Tosh harshly when Tara inquired about Annie joining her on a hospital visit, Donnie didn’t hold back his criticism towards the detective as well.
After not saying a word when she came home, he asked, ‘What seems to be the issue with Tara?'” or simply, “He inquired about Tara’s problem, following his initial silence upon her arrival.
“It’s work, Donnie,” she said. “I can’t talk about it, OK?”
I couldn’t help but feel dissatisfied with her reply, and I found myself making things difficult for her because I believed she had disrupted the peace I felt for Tara.
He responded, “Nope, that won’t do,” indicating that continuously employing such behavior as a reason for irritating others isn’t acceptable. Remember, Tosh, these are our acquaintances – individuals we have come to know well.
Yet, she was prompt in reminding him that, despite how well we believe we understand those around us, everyone harbors hidden truths. It falls upon individuals such as Tosh to unveil these mysteries, even when the process is uncomfortable and uncomfortable.
“Well, to be honest, Tosh, I don’t know how you can do your job,” he spat back.
But she refused to back down.
“I am trying to find out who killed Annie, and I won’t apologise for that,” she said with finality.
Donnie then walked off, leaving a very dejected Tosh on her own.
She said that, much like any other relationship, they encounter tough times, but this situation seemed unique and distinct.
“This goes deeper into understanding their bond, individual perspectives of one another, their view on their relationship within this tight-knit community, and their shared values.
I’m concerned that Tosh won’t escape without some damage. By the end of the series, her relationships aren’t as strong or stable as they were at the start.
But alongside that ongoing discord, there was a new development in episode 4.
As a devoted admirer, I’d rephrase it like this: One day, I got a call from an old police contact about Euan Rossi, a buddy of mine, Annie’s friend, and someone she had collaborated with as an analyst in the intelligence service, according to what he had shared with me before.
But when Calder informed him that Rossi was in Shetland, he warned the detective to “bring him in”.
He mentioned that he’s unsure about Rossi’s presence and his activities, but warned that Rossi is potentially harmful. As it turned out, the person in question was picking up a firearm right then and there.
1) The ninth season of Shetland resumes on BBC One and iPlayer this coming Wednesday, 4th December, at 9 PM.
