The beloved Devil Summoner is making a return with a fresh coat of paint! In the recent Nintendo Direct presentation, Atlus confirmed that the 2006 game Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army will be remastered under the new Raidou Remastered: The Enigma of the Soulless Army. After nearly 20 years, this Shin Megami Tensei game promises numerous enhancements, including an upgraded battle system and full voice acting. The release date has also been set: June 19th. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S. As of now, there’s no information about a launch for the Nintendo Switch 2.
In “Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army,” young detective Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, also a part-time Devil Summoner, navigates through the Taisho era to protect the capital and a mysterious woman from malevolent forces. Unlike other Shin Megami Tensei games, the combat style is more action-oriented, offering players freedom to move around the battlefield and strike in their preferred manner, using various weapons such as swords, axes, guns, or summoned demons. Additionally, you’ll be playing the role of a detective, following leads – human and demonic – to solve the numerous cases that plague the Capital and extend beyond its borders.
Initially launched about twenty years back on the PlayStation 2, the game “Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army” has been remastered and rebranded. In a special event focusing on this updated edition, director Kazuyuki Yamai explained that the remastering was aimed at making it more appealing to contemporary gamers. He believes that the narrative and themes of the game will still resonate with players, just as they did when it first came out. The title change helps distinguish it from the original, as this version better embodies the original team’s intended vision and also incorporates elements from its sequel, “Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon,” such as the combat system.
In contrast to Persona, the Devil Summoner spin-off series within the Shin Megami Tensei franchise has gained a significant following among fans. The character Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, with his intriguing and charming personality despite being silent, has become particularly beloved by these fans. In Japan, his popularity was so immense that he was incorporated into the Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Chronicle Edition and the HD Remaster. However, due to limited exposure of the series in Western regions, Dante from Devil May Cry was featured instead, ultimately resulting in the well-known “Featuring Dante from Devil May Cry” label.
Regardless of the choice, “Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army” is undeniably a game that fans of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei will not want to miss out on. With 2024 offering titles like “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, “Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance”, and “Persona 3 Reload”, it’s clear that the series will continue to provide enjoyable experiences for fans. The anticipated rumor of a “Persona 4” remake could further extend these good times, making the series even more captivating in the near future.
